Market Chatter: Japan Airlines, ANA to Raise Fuel Surcharge as Jet Fuel Costs Rise Amid Iran War

Japan's two largest airlines, Japan Airlines (TYO:9201) and ANA (TYO:9202), will implement fuel surcharge increases starting next month following a sharp rise in jet fuel costs triggered by the Iran war, Nikkei Asia reported on Tuesday. The carriers will adjust their pricing systems to raise the maximum surcharge, with new rates taking effect for international tickets purchased from May 1 onward, coinciding with Japan's Golden Week holiday period, the news agency said.Fuel surcharges, which are recalculated every two months based on kerosene prices, prompted the airline's decision after the average price from February to March reached $146.99 per barrel, the publication said.Japan Airlines will raise its surcharge for flights from Japan to Europe or North America by 93% to 56,000 yen, while flights to South Korea will more than double to 6,500 yen, the report said.Similarly, ANA will increase its cap on the surcharge, raising flights to North America and Europe from 31,900 yen to 56,000 yen and flights to South Korea from 3,300 yen to 6,700 yen, the report added.(Market Chatter news is derived from conversations with market professionals globally. Market Chatter: Japan-Europe Nonstop Airfares Surge 90% After U.S.-Israeli Strikes on Iran, Nikkei Finds

Following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, airfares on direct Japan-Europe routes have spiked sharply, with some ANA (TYO:9202) flights to London recording a 90% price increase, Nikkei Asia reported on Tuesday, citing its own analysis.According to Nikkei's tracking of round-trip fares from Tokyo's Haneda to London in early June, ANA's nonstop service surged from roughly 250,000 yen to over 480,000 yen between late February and mid-April, the publication said. This jump reflects a decline in demand for Japan-Europe flights that connect through the Middle East, as passengers avoid conflict-affected hubs, the news agency said.In contrast, fares for carriers like Emirates and Etihad, which route via Dubai or Abu Dhabi, have remained flat or even dipped, highlighting how geopolitical instability is reshaping travel patterns, the report said.(Market Chatter news is derived from conversations with market professionals globally.
