Oracle Margin Pressure, Modest Guidance Raise Leave Morgan Stanley Needing More Visibility

Oracle's (ORCL) fiscal first-quarter results showed surging cloud growth, but margin pressure and a "modest" earnings guidance raise left Morgan Stanley wanting more visibility on infrastructure buildout and profitability.Oracle reported strong fiscal first-quarter results late Thursday, driven by above-consensus cloud sales that were buoyed by infrastructure revenue growth of 121% year over year.Morgan Stanley said Friday the company's non-GAAP gross profit margin fell to 61% in the three months through August from 68.7% a year ago, missing the brokerage's and Wall Street's estimate of about 62%."Our gross margin did decline as expected, driven by impacts from ramping up our data centers and the acceleration of infrastructure revenue," Chief Financial Officer Hilary Maxson said during Thursday's earnings call, according to a FactSet transcript. "However, this was offset in the quarter by lower operating costs and strong operating leverage tied to simplification and efficiency actions."Oracle expects gross margins to "flatten" over the next couple of years, Maxson told analysts."We'd like to see more evidence of the progress towards gross margin stabilization, more visibility on where and when infrastructure capacity comes on stream and (ideally but less critically) an improving trend in apps to turn more constructive," Morgan Stanley said.Cloud application revenue missed Wall Street's estimates by 1% in the first quarter, the brokerage wrote.Oracle raised its fiscal 2027 adjusted earnings per share guidance to $8.10 from $8.05. Morgan Stanley described the upward revision as "modest."The brokerage reiterated its equal-weight rating on Oracle's stock, with a $210 price target. The company reported capital expenditure of $28.50 billion in the first quarter, resulting in negative free cash flow of $5.40 billion. "Our capex will not be linear throughout the year," Maxson said. "We continue to anticipate $90 billion to $95 billion in capex for the full year, with not more than $70 billion in net cash capex."Oracle's plan to convert nearly half of its $664 billion remaining performance obligations into revenue over the next 36 months without lifting the capex outlook is encouraging, Morgan Stanley added.Shares were down 0.9% in Friday trading. The stock has lost 22% this year.Amazon's (AMZN) second-quarter results showed in July that operating margin increased to 13.7% from 11.4% in the same quarter last year, while Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) expanded 2 percentage points to 34%. Microsoft (MSFT) reported that its fiscal fourth-quarter gross margin jumped to $60.48 billion from $52.43 billion in the prior-year period.Price: $151.89, Change: $-1.05, Percent Change: -0.69%

Oracle Tops First-Quarter Expectations as Cloud Infrastructure Revenue More Than Doubles

Oracle's (ORCL) fiscal first-quarter results surpassed Wall Street's estimates as cloud infrastructure sales more than doubled year over year.Revenue increased 30% year-on-year to $19.35 billion during the three months through August, above the FactSet-polled consensus of $19.14 billion. Adjusted earnings per share rose to $1.92 from $1.47 a year earlier, compared with the Street's $1.74 view.Cloud sales advanced 62% to $11.61 billion, driven by a 121% jump in infrastructure to $7.39 billion. Wall Street expected $11.51 billion in overall cloud revenue.Oracle's remaining performance obligations -- future commitments arising from contractual relationships -- soared $209 billion year-on-year to $664 billion. The company booked more than $30 billion of AI cloud contracts in the fiscal first quarter."Customer demand for AI cloud training and inferencing services continues to grow faster than supply," the cloud computing company said late Thursday.Oracle delivered more than 300,000 graphics processing units to AI cloud customers since the end of May, nearly triple the capacity shipped during the fourth quarter.Shares were up 6.8% in after-hours trading. The stock is down 22% this year through Thursday close.Oracle's software segment edged 3% lower annually to $5.55 billion.Earlier in the week, Oppenheimer said strong results across enterprise software companies in the most recent quarter point to healthy demand, which should bode well for Oracle's cloud business."Our regression analysis foretells upside in (Oracle cloud infrastructure, or OCI) growth and RPO conversions in (the fiscal first quarter)," the brokerage said in a Tuesday note. "In combination with additional gigawatt capacity coming online, this could support higher (fiscal 2027) guidance while reinforcing the bull case that OCI demand remains supply -- not demand -- constrained."Major technology companies have reported strong annual growth rates for their cloud businesses in the latest earnings season, with Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) cloud revenue surging 82% to $24.77 billion. Microsoft (MSFT) cloud computing platform Azure rallied 43%, while Amazon's (AMZN) Web Services revenue jumped 37%.Oracle expects revenue to grow by 30% to 34% in the second quarter, with cloud sales seen rising 64% and 70%. Non-GAAP EPS is expected to grow between 21% and 25%, reaching $1.85 to $1.91. Markets expect adjusted EPS of $1.89 on consolidated revenue growth of 32% to $21.18 billion.Oracle raised its fiscal 2027 non-GAAP EPS guidance to $8.10 from $8.05. The company expects at least $90 billion in full-year revenue. Analysts expect $8.07 and $89.66 billion, respectively.

Alphabet's TPU Sales Could Drive Significant Google Cloud Upside, Oppenheimer Says

Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) tensor processing unit opportunity could drive substantial upside to Google Cloud revenue and earnings through 2028, Oppenheimer said in a report emailed Thursday. The firm forecasts about 6.6 gigawatts of external TPU sales through 2028, representing roughly $170 billion in "cumulative incremental" revenue that is not reflected in current Wall Street estimates. The projections imply Google Cloud revenue could be 15% above consensus in 2027 and 30% above in 2028, with "consolidated" earnings per share potentially 4% and 18% above consensus, respectively, according to the report.Oppenheimer raised Google Cloud revenue estimates to $120.4 billion for 2026, $203 billion for 2027 and $322.7 billion for 2028. Google Cloud operating profit was projected at $39.9 billion, $68.5 billion and $117.1 billion, respectively, according to the report. The firm also said an artificial intelligence survey showed Google remains "in lead position" with consumers. Gemini ranked as the second-most-used AI service behind Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI's ChatGPT, while respondents were about four times more likely to trust Google than Meta Platforms (META) "with passwords," a potentially important advantage for AI-driven commerce.Oppenheimer reiterated an outperform rating on Alphabet with a price target of $400.Price: $330.35, Change: $-0.30, Percent Change: -0.09%

Qualcomm to Supply Customized AI Chips to Amazon Web Services' Data Centers

Qualcomm (QCOM) will provide custom-built chips and high-speed optical connectivity for the artificial intelligence data centers of Amazon's (AMZN) cloud computing division as part of a collaboration, the companies said Tuesday. In connection with the partnership, the semiconductor giant issued a warrant to Amazon to acquire up to 25 million Qualcomm common shares at an exercise price of $161.26 per share, according to a regulatory filing.Qualcomm shares were up 3.7% in Tuesday afternoon trade, while Amazon edged down 0.4%."As AI demand accelerates, data center infrastructure will require advances in both computing and connectivity to deliver greater performance with more efficiency," Qualcomm Chief Executive Cristiano Amon said in a statement. "Qualcomm is pleased to work with (Amazon Web Services) on customized silicon and connectivity solutions."The warrant allows for cashless exercise and is scheduled to expire Sept. 3, 2036, Qualcomm said in the filing. The warrant shares vest in tranches related to the execution of certain commercial arrangements and purchases of QTI's server chip products, technology, systems and manufacturing services by Amazon, up to a maximum amount of $60 billion in payments, according to the filing. In June, Qualcomm -- which has historically been known for designing and producing mobile phone chips -- said that it was accelerating its diversification roadmap to include AI data centers. The company said at the time it was aiming for more than $15 billion in data center revenue by fiscal 2029."By working together on customized silicon and advanced connectivity, we're delivering more performant, efficient, and cost-effective infrastructure for our customers," Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president AWS, said Tuesday.Amazon and other hyperscalers are spending huge sums to expand their AI infrastructure footprints globally amid growing demand for AI and cloud services. In July, Amazon raised its full-year capital expenditures outlook to roughly $220 billion from $200 billion, driven by higher memory costs.Last month, chip designer Marvell Technology (MRVL) entered into a deal that would allow Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google to purchase up to $12.18 billion of Marvell shares as part of a collaboration. That deal also involved the issuance of a warrant. As part of what it described as a "multi-generational product collaboration" with the e-commerce giant, Qualcomm said Tuesday intends to "deepen" its use of AWS AI infrastructure in designing chips. In June, Qualcomm agreed to acquire software infrastructure firm Modular in a roughly $3.92 billion deal in a bid to bolster its ability to deliver a more optimized AI compute layer.Price: $175.23, Change: $+6.49, Percent Change: +3.85%

"Nvidia's infrastructure, engineering and global reach can help improve platform reliability, safety, model evaluation, inference and deployment capabilities, while preserving the open ecosystem that made Hugging Face foundational."The transaction, which requires regulatory approval, is expected to complete in the first half of next year, Nvidia said in the filing.Nvidia cautioned that government restrictions on the use of open-source models that originated in China could limit the expected benefits of the acquisition."Any regulatory control or other restriction that limits our ability to provide products and services that support models derived from any region, including China, could have a material impact on Hugging Face's platform, as well as a material impact on our business, operating results, and financial condition," the company said in the regulatory filing. The deal comes as major technology companies step up acquisitions to bolster their capabilities. Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google agreed in March 2025 to acquire cloud security platform Wiz for $32 billion and completed the transaction in March this year.Meta Platforms (META) announced a deal to acquire AI startup Manus in December 2025. However, Chinese regulators ordered the transaction to be unwound, Reuters reported in August.Earlier this week, Nvidia expanded its partnership with chip designer MediaTek, including a $3.5 billion investment, to support adoption of the company's proprietary interconnect technology for custom rack-scale AI chips.Last month, the tech bellwether reported fiscal second-quarter results that more than doubled from a year ago and topped Wall Street expectations. In the same month, Nvidia announced an expanded partnership to supply 2 million additional graphics processing units for Amazon.com's (AMZN) Amazon Web Services.Price: $227.62, Change: $+3.21, Percent Change: +1.43%
