RWE Q1 Renewable Output Climbs 16% YOY
German renewable energy company RWE said Wednesday its electricity generation from renewable sources rose 16% year over year to 15.224 terawatt-hours in Q1, primarily due to higher wind speeds and the commissioning of new wind and solar farms in the US.Renewable energy accounted for around 43% of the total Q1 power output of 35.680 TWh, according to RWE's Q1 results. The firm generated a total of 35.386 TWh of electricity in the year-ago period, it said, of which 13.125 TWh were produced from renewables.In Q1, electricity produced from offshore wind assets grew year over year to 3.453 TWh from 2.381 TWh, and those from onshore sources climbed to 7.077 TWh from 6.133 TWh.Solar output also increased to 3.017 TWh from 2.563 TWh, and contribution from batteries and storage facilities rose to 31 gigawatt-hours from 26 GWh.RWE said it has commissioned 2.3 gigawatts of new wind farms, solar plants and battery storage facilities since the end of March 2025.Data also showed that hydropower output declined to 537 GWh from 560 GWh. Biomass generation slipped to 1.140 TWh from 1.488 TWh, due to the ramp-down of Eemshaven power station in the Netherlands as per network operator instruction.RWE also reported that its production from gas-fired power plants dropped year over year to 10.559 TWh from 11.929 TWh, due to decreased generation from assets in the Netherlands and Turkey.Lignite-fired plants added 8.165 TWh of generation during the period, up versus the previous year's 7.850 TWh, driven by higher availability of the 1.06-GW Neurath F Unit in Germany. Production from other energy sources also decreased to 1.701 TWh from 2.456 TWh.Gas and coal accounted for 30% and 27%, respectively, of the total Q1 output, the company said.In the UK, RWE said it had secured contracts for difference for five offshore wind projects, which could deliver up to 6.9 GW of generation capacity, and for five solar and three onshore wind projects, totaling 291 megawatts.
