Certain Major US Airlines Could Miss Third-Quarter Bottom-Line Views Amid Fuel Headwinds, UBS Says

Certain major US airlines could miss market expectations for their third-quarter earnings amid higher fuel prices and operational disruptions from bad weather, UBS Securities said in a note e-mailed Thursday. The brokerage expects Delta Air Lines (DAL), United Airlines (UAL) and American Airlines' (AAL) bottom-lines for the September quarter to fall short of Wall Street's views, while Southwest Airlines (LUV) and Alaska Air Group (ALK) are seen delivering beats."We see modest downside to (third-quarter earnings per share) for some players on the back of higher fuel for (the third quarter versus) guidance, as well as irregular operations from uneven weather in July/Aug," UBS analysts Atul Maheswari and Thomas Wadewitz said in a note to clients.US crude oil prices surged past $100 per barrel Thursday, a day after global benchmark Brent breached the same threshold amid intensifying tensions between the US and Iran. The renewed flare-up has sparked fears of prolonged supply disruptions.Still, airline demand seems have stayed strong so far in the third quarter despite additional rounds of price hikes last month amid higher fuel prices, UBS said."We think these price increases have been more localized by markets as opposed to the broad-based increases that the industry witnessed in the immediate aftermath of the Iran war," Maheswari and Wadewitz wrote.Higher fuel prices could further dent airlines' fourth-quarter earnings, but a 16% drop in the US Global Jets ETF -- which groups the major US airlines -- since the start of August shows investors have already priced in the impact, according to the note.UBS slashed its 2026 and 2027 bottom-line outlooks for the major airlines it covers, largely to factor in higher fuel prices. The brokerage also lowered its respective price targets on the stocks of United, Delta Air, Alaska Air, Southwest, American and JetBlue Airways (JBLU).While positioning was net short on the sector roughly a month ago, it is now likely closer to net neutral amid a pullback in stocks, according to the note."We have increasingly fielded questions on what could be the potential silver lining from upcoming airlines presentations next week," the analysts wrote. "On that point, it's possible there might be upside to consensus (fourth-quarter revenue per available seat mile/revenue) given strong demand and the recent price increases."UBS named United, Southwest, and Alaska Air as its "top near-term picks."Price: $78.17, Change: $-0.58, Percent Change: -0.74%

JetBlue Balance Sheet Risks Could Grow as Hormuz Reopening Hopes Dim, Seaport Says in Downgrade

JetBlue Airways' (JBLU) balance sheet woes could worsen as the Strait of Hormuz appears unlikely to reopen anytime soon, potentially prolonging jet fuel volatility, Seaport Research Partners said Monday. The 60-day memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran aimed at ending their conflict expired Monday, with no indications that it would be extended. Control of the Strait of Hormuz has proved to be a key sticking point in recent diplomatic efforts to reach a truce. The narrow waterway is the world's most important chokepoint for crude flows. While jet fuel volatility amid the Hormuz uncertainty affects all airlines, it is particularly more concerning for JetBlue, which is already heavily indebted, according to Seaport senior analyst Daniel McKenzie. The company had total debt of $8.48 billion as of June 30, it reported late last month."To be sure, jet fuel volatility is a challenge for all, but it's a disproportionate risk to (JetBlue) given elevated debt levels that are at risk of moving higher before they move lower," McKenzie said in a note to clients Monday. "If oil spikes from increased hostilities with Iran and (JetBlue) is forced to boost debt to fund losses, its balance sheet could become too indebted and shares could ultimately become worthless."Seaport downgraded its rating on the JetBlue stock to neutral from buy and withdrew its price target, just months after upgrading the stock on the assumption that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen."Greater geopolitical risk implies a lower valuation multiple, hence our view investors will likely get a lower entry point," McKenzie said Monday. "(Fourth-quarter) schedules are now firming up and at the industry level, supply appears modestly higher (versus the third quarter). Hence our concern that revenue upside for (JetBlue) -- and others -- could be limited at a time when it may need to boost ticket prices."JetBlue shares were down 6.2% in afternoon trade. American Airlines Group (AAL) shares were 1.6% lower, while Southwest Airlines (LUV), United Airlines (UAL) and Delta Air Lines (DAL) were also in the red.US President Donald Trump warned of an attack on Oman if it "gets in the way" of efforts in the Strait of Hormuz, news outlets reported Monday."The industry pricing backdrop remains solid, which leads us to conclude (JetBlue) surprises on (2026 second-half) revenue, however, the geopolitical backdrop worsens," McKenzie wrote in the note.Price: $5.32, Change: $-0.33, Percent Change: -5.84%

American Airlines Cuts Earnings Outlook as Fuel Shock Dents Second-Quarter Bottom-Line

American Airlines (AAL) lowered its full-year earnings outlook on Thursday as higher fuel costs drove second-quarter bottom-line lower year on year, adding to signs that rising fuel prices are weighing on airline profitability. The airline now anticipates its bottom line to range from an adjusted loss of $0.65 per share to earnings of $0.65 per share for 2026, compared with its previous guidance for a loss of $0.40 to earnings of $1.10. The consensus on FactSet is for non-GAAP EPS of $0.61.Shares of American Airlines declined 8% in Thursday trade, with the stock losing 11% so far this year.Jet fuel's average price rose to $149.40 per barrel last week, up from $119.13 for the week ended July 3, data published by the International Air Transport Association showed. The surge came as rising tensions between the US and Iran sent crude oil prices higher.American Airlines said its second-quarter fuel costs jumped by $2.2 billion, or 83% year over year, although it was able to offset almost 50% of the headwind through higher fares amid robust travel demand. For the ongoing quarter, American Airlines sees its fuel expense rising by $1.7 billion on an annual basis.Earlier in the week, Alaska Air (ALK) issued a downbeat third-quarter earnings forecast and swung to a loss in the previous three-month period amid higher fuel costs. Earlier this month, United Airlines (UAL) projected about $6 billion in additional fuel expense for 2026, while Delta Air Lines (DAL) said it absorbed the highest quarterly fuel expense in its history.American Airlines' adjusted EPS slumped to $0.15 in the June quarter from $0.95 the year before, but topped the Street's view for $0.03. Total operating revenue climbed 16% to $16.74 billion, ahead of the average analyst estimate of $16.7 billion. Passenger revenue advanced 16% while cargo climbed 30%."Revenue growth was strong across all entities and cabins, with premium, main cabin, domestic and international all up meaningfully year over year," Chief Executive Robert Isom said in a statement.Total revenue per available seat mile, which is commonly used in the airline industry to measure efficiency, gained 10%. Capacity was up 5.4%.The airline expects to record an adjusted loss of $0.10 to $0.70 in the third quarter, while the Street is looking for non-GAAP EPS of $0.26. Revenue is projected to gain 16% to 19% on capacity growth of 3% to 5%. The market's view is for sales of $16.01 billion in the quarter.Price: $13.69, Change: $-1.10, Percent Change: -7.44%

Major Banks Poised for Strong Quarterly Results, Outlook, Deutsche Bank Says

US large-cap banks are expected to report strong second-quarter earnings and issue upbeat guidance, with Huntington Bancshares (HBAN), US Bancorp (USB), and Wells Fargo (WFC) seen as top picks, Deutsche Bank said Monday. The brokerage's per-share earnings estimates for major banks are 2% above Wall Street's views on average, as others likely have not factored in the intra-quarter guidance updates from lenders. Deutsche Bank said it's "most above consensus" on Citigroup (C) and JPMorgan Chase (JPM)."Several banks tweaked up their quarterly (net interest income) expectations in early June (driven by strong loan growth) and pointed to better-than-expected investment banking and trading/markets (revenue)," Deutsche Bank analyst Matt O'Connor said in a note to clients.Bank earnings are scheduled to kick off July 14, with JPMorgan, Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup, Goldman Sachs (GS), and Wells Fargo slated to report.Huntington trends likely stabilized in the June quarter, with results seen improving in the second half of the year, according to Deutsche Bank."We believe key issues seem to be resolving, including questions surrounding loan growth, liquidity, and deal risk," O'Connor said. "(Huntington) shares trade at the lowest multiple among our coverage despite a solid long-term track record of both deal integrations and organic growth."US Bancorp is experiencing improved execution under Chief Executive Gunjan Kedia and an upward bias to its full-year revenue outlook following consecutive strong quarterly performances. The lender's recently completed the acquisition of financial services firm BTIG is well-timed due to broad strength in equity trading, while the bank's payments division is also positioned to benefit from strong retail sales volumes, O'Connor said.Wells Fargo shares have lagged its peers so far this year following a couple of disappointing quarters regarding both financial results and outlook, Deutsche Bank said. However, first-quarter trends were better than initially perceived."Momentum has also been building more than the market appreciates in our view post the lifting of the asset cap in June of 2025 and we expect this to be more evident in (second quarter)/beyond," O'Connor wrote.Deutsche Bank's higher EPS outlook for Citigroup factors in a revenue boost from the recent transfer of American Airlines (AAL) card receivables from Barclays (BCS), according to the note.Price: $17.74, Change: $-0.05, Percent Change: -0.28%
