SK Hynix Shares Jump 14% in Nasdaq Debut

SK Hynix (SKHY, SKHYV) was rallying 14% on Friday as the South Korean chipmaker listed its American depositary shares on the Nasdaq in what will likely be the second-largest share sale in the US.SK Hynix opened trade at $170 and moved as high as $177, having priced its initial public offering of 177.9 million ADS at $149 apiece.Its US-listed shares were last trading at $169.68 under the symbol SKHYV, up 14% from the IPO price. The shares will switch to the SKHY ticker beginning Monday. Each ADS represents one-tenth of a common share of SK Hynix.The IPO, which would raise $26.51 billion, is expected to close on Tuesday, the company said. Demand, which dropped by 4.8-million bpd in the second quarter, is expected to continue to contract in the third quarter on light supply and high prices, though is expected to rise by 1.2-million bpd in the fourth quarter.

PJM Uses Emergency Measures to Maintain Reliability Through Record July Heatwave

PJM Interconnection maintained reliable grid operations during an unprecedented July heat wave that pushed electricity demand to a record high and required the use of all available generation resources, it said in a Friday statement.PJM, a regional power grid operator that coordinates electricity supply and transmission across 13 US states and the District of Columbia in the mid-Atlantic and parts of the Midwest, reached a preliminary all-time peak load of 168,158 megawatts between 5 and 6 pm on July 2, surpassing the previous record of 165,563 MW set Aug. 2, 2006. The estimate includes demand response resources that reduced electricity consumption during the system emergency.The record occurred as the PJM region experienced its hottest-ever average temperature, reaching 97 degrees on July 2. Temperatures in parts of the Mid-Atlantic climbed into the low 100s. At the same time, forced generation outages ranged from 18,100 MW to 19,400 MW between July 2-4, well above the 12,800 MW average outage level recorded during the top 10 summer peak days of the past three years."This was the highest peak we have ever served, through an unprecedented heat wave," said PJM Dispatch Senior Manager Paul Dajewski. He credited coordination among PJM, generators, transmission owners and neighboring grid operators for maintaining system reliability.As demand approached its peak July 2, several generators tripped offline, prompting PJM to activate emergency procedures, including calling on demand response resources. PJM estimated demand response performance at 6,113 MW on July 2 and 5,037 MW on July 3.The preliminary peak load reflects the electricity demand PJM would have served without curtailment actions, it said. Final demand response performance and official peak load figures will be released after a 60-day evaluation.The peak approached PJM's summer forecast of 169,128 MW, a level expected to occur only once in 10 years. Dajewski warned that while the system performed successfully, capacity margins remain a concern as demand growth continues to outpace new supply additions.PJM also said it received the US Department of Energy's approval for emergency orders allowing temporary relief from environmental operating limits and potential curtailment of certain large loads if needed. PJM estimated about 3.25 GW of generation operated beyond normal permit limits. The emergency orders were effective July 1-6.

Global refining capacity, rather than crude oil supply, has become the biggest energy security risk as geopolitical tensions disrupt fuel markets, Kpler said in a Friday update.Kpler said governments have traditionally focused on securing crude supplies, but recent events show refining capacity now poses the greater challenge because it determines how quickly crude can reach consumers as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.Although markets repeatedly expected diplomacy to ease tensions with Iran, tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains well below pre-February levels as shipowners continue to avoid the route, the note said.Crude prices have fallen back toward pre-conflict levels after geopolitical risk eased, while weaker Chinese crude imports and releases from the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve returned over 7 million barrels per day to the global market, Kpler strategists said.Refined fuel markets have not recovered as quickly because Ukrainian drone strikes have reduced Russian refinery operations, while disruptions in the Middle East have further limited exports of gasoline, diesel and gasoil.Kpler said governments have ample tools to respond to crude supply disruptions but far fewer options when refining capacity tightens, allowing pressure to build in fuel markets even as crude prices stabilize.Kpler said fuel markets now point to refining capacity as the main supply constraint, with RBOB gasoline, heating oil and gasoil maintaining historically strong premiums to Brent crude.Kpler's modeling showed that reopening the Strait of Hormuz would do little to rebuild fuel supplies. Even under an immediate reopening scenario, global gasoline inventories remain historically tight, with days cover staying near 25 days.Russia has periodically restricted fuel exports after repeated Ukrainian drone attacks disrupted nearly half of its roughly 6.7 million barrels per day of refining capacity, Kpler said.The note said Middle Eastern product exports are also unlikely to recover quickly because tanker repositioning, inventory rebuilding and restoring confidence in Strait of Hormuz transit will take time.Kpler also warned that the US could face higher gasoline prices despite weaker crude oil prices. National average gasoline prices remain near $3.80 per gallon, while inventories stand near 210 million barrels, keeping fuel supplies historically tight.Kpler said gasoline prices could climb above $4 per gallon if inventories continue to tighten through the rest of the summer, even without another sharp increase in crude prices.The note said future energy security strategies should focus on strengthening refining capacity alongside crude supply, as restoring fuel production and distribution takes far longer than reopening crude shipping routes.
