Solar Tops Ercot, Caiso Output While Natural Gas Leads PJM, NYISO Generation
Electricity prices across major US wholesale markets climbed during Wednesday afternoon as high temperatures lifted power demand across several regions, according to data from GridStatus.io.PJM Interconnection's real-time locational marginal price stood at $31.65/MWh as of 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday.PJM's generation mix at 2 p.m. ET was led by gas at 51.31 gigawatts or 42.3% of total generation, followed by nuclear at 32.79 GW or 27%, coal at 18.77 GW or 15.5%, solar at 11.67 GW or 9.6%, multiple fuels at 2.75 GW or 2.3%, while other sources supplied the remainder.New York Independent System Operator's real-time locational marginal price stood at $49.98/MWh as of 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday.NYISO's generation mix at 2 p.m. ET was led by natural gas at 5.32 GW or 30.5% of total generation, followed by dual fuel at 4.66 GW or 26.7%, nuclear at 3.2 GW or 18.4%, hydro at 2.96 GW or 17%, wind at 0.97 GW or 5.6%, while other sources supplied the remainder.Midcontinent Independent System Operator's real-time locational marginal price stood at $33.82/MWh as of 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday.Miso's generation mix at 2 p.m. ET was led by coal at 35.78 GW or 33.4% of total generation, followed by natural gas at 34.51 GW or 32.2%, solar at 18.56 GW or 17.3%, nuclear at 11.63 GW or 10.9%, wind at 3.72 GW or 3.5%, while other sources supplied the remainder.Electric Reliability Council of Texas's real-time wholesale power price stood at $28.22/MWh as of 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday.Ercot's generation mix at 2 p.m. ET was led by solar at 32.17 GW or 38.1% of total generation, followed by natural gas at 31.15 GW or 36.9%, coal and lignite at 9.12 GW or 10.8%, wind at 7.05 GW or 8.3%, and nuclear at 4.97 GW or 5.9%. Other sources supplied the remainder.California Independent System Operator's real-time locational marginal price stood at $28.59/MWh as of 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday.Caiso's generation mix at 2 p.m. ET was led by solar at 22.7 GW or 60.7% of total generation, followed by natural gas at 7.5 GW or 20.1%, nuclear at 2.27 GW or 6.1%, wind at 1.87 GW or 5%, and large hydro at 1.74 GW or 4.6%. Geothermal, small hydro and biomass were some of the sources that supplied the remainder.The National Weather Service has said "dangerous heat" will persist across the southern US through the rest of the week as strong high pressure keeps temperatures well above normal."Afternoon highs are expected to reach mid-to-upper 90s across the region, with highs into the low 100s for portions of the southern Plains," NWS said. Heat index values of 105 to 115 degrees will create hazardous conditions, with major to extreme heat risk expected, according to NWS.
