Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (TYO:7011) and ispace (TYO:9348) have signed a contract for the launch of the new lander Ultra for a lunar landing mission scheduled for 2028, according to a Wednesday release.The Ultra mission will use H3, the Japanese flagship rocket developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.The partnership aims to build a privately led Japanese lunar transportation system with a domestically produced lander and rocket.The project has obtained a grant from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program.Shares of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and ispace both fell more than 2% in recent trade.

ispace Unit, European Space Agency Sign EUR65 Million ESA Lunar Rove Deal

ispace's (TYO:9348) Luxembourg unit, ispace EUROPE, signed a supplemental agreement with the European Space Agency worth 65 million euros to develop a lunar rover for the MAGPIE mission.The Phase 2 agreement covers the rover's development, manufacturing, operation and transportation, according to a Friday Japan Exchange filing.The rover is planned to fly as a payload on ispace's Mission 4, scheduled for launch in 2029.The company said the contract has already been factored into its earnings forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2027.
