BJ's Wholesale Club's Fiscal Q2 Results Demonstrate Business Model's Relevance, UBS Says

BJ's Wholesale Club's (BJ) fiscal Q2 results demonstrated the relevance of its business model, despite competitive pressures, UBS analysts said in a Sunday note. The analysts expect the company to benefit from further trade in its merchandising enhancements and its ability to boost membership in new and existing markets.UBS said the BJ's fiscal Q2 core same-store sales growth of 3.1% was primarily driven by its higher-income customer cohort, but noted its lower-income customer cohort also returned to positive comparable growth.Analysts added that BJ's strong membership growth and consistent growth in MFI per member suggest its efforts to improve member experience and boost higher-tier penetration are paying off.UBS retained a buy rating on the stock and increased its price target to $115 from $109.Price: $99.55, Change: $+3.13, Percent Change: +3.25%

BJ's Wholesale Club Fiscal Second-Quarter Results Top Views; Raises Full-Year Earnings Outlook

BJ's Wholesale Club's (BJ) fiscal second-quarter results came in ahead of Wall Street's estimates, prompting the warehouse club operator to lift its full-year earnings outlook. The company on Friday reported adjusted earnings of $1.36 a share for the quarter ended Aug. 1, up from $1.14 the year before, exceeding the FactSet-polled consensus of $1.17. Overall revenue climbed 16% to $6.23 billion, topping the Street's view for $5.97 billion.Comparable club sales, excluding the impact of gasoline sales, increased 3.1% and were ahead of the market's forecast for a rise of 2.6%. The stock gained 4.7% in Friday trading."Our second-quarter results reflect strong execution and continued momentum in the business," Chief Financial Officer Laura Felice said in a statement. "We delivered solid profitability, grew membership fee income, and outperformed on gas -- all of which enabled us to raise our full year adjusted EPS guidance."BJ's now anticipates adjusted EPS in the range of $4.60 to $4.80 for fiscal 2026, up from its previous guidance of $4.40 to $4.60. Comparable club sales, excluding gasoline, are still pegged to increase by 2% to 3%. The current average analyst estimate is for non-GAAP EPS of $4.53 and same-store sales growth of 2.5%.Last week, Deutsche Bank said in an emailed client note that it expected BJ's to deliver a "modest" second-quarter beat, while the brokerage lifted its same-store sales estimate for the warehouse club operator to 2.6%."We delivered a strong second quarter, coming in ahead of our expectations across sales and profitability, with strong membership momentum," BJ's Chief Executive Bob Eddy said. "Our value proposition continued to resonate with members in our clubs and at our gas stations."Members continued to show up at the company's gas stations amid elevated prices during the quarter, Eddy said during an earnings call, according to a FactSet transcript."Comp gallons were up double digits, accelerating from the strong results we saw in (the first quarter) and a clear signal of the share we continue to take," Eddy said on the call. "Strong volume growth, combined with favorable pullback from peak gas prices drove fuel profit dollars ahead of plan, which was a meaningful contributor to our overall results."US retail gasoline prices averaged $4.1092 per gallon on Friday, compared with $4.0776 a week ago and $4.0190 a month ago, according to data from AAA, a motoring and leisure travel membership organization that tracks fuel prices in the US.On Thursday, Walmart (WMT) reported fiscal second-quarter results, with US comparable sales growth slowing more than Wall Street expected amid a pharmacy-related headwind. Stocks Rise Pre-Bell as Investors Eye Recovery Following Sharp Selloff

The benchmark US stock measures were tracking in the green before the open Friday following a sharp selloff in the previous session, when Treasury yields climbed despite the government's efforts to ease pressure in the bond market. The S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.3% each in premarket activity, while the Nasdaq added 0.6%. The Dow ended the previous session with its lowest close since July 31, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq finished at their lowest levels since Aug. 3.Treasury yields were trending higher in premarket action, with the two-year rate increasing 0.4 basis points to 4.19% and the 10-year rate gaining 0.2 basis points to 4.7%. "Shaping the yield curve and buying treasuries is normally a policy area for the (Federal Reserve), so it sets up an interesting tension with Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, who will speak at next week's Fed symposium at Jackson Hole, Wyoming."West Texas Intermediate crude oil nudged up to $86.83 a barrel before the opening bell, while Brent dipped 0.1% to $93.70.Bessent also told CNBC on Thursday that the US is looking to implement the "toughest sanctions in history" against Iran. Research

Research Alert: CFRA Keeps Hold Opinion On Shares Of Bj's Wholesale Club Holdings, Inc.

CFRA, an independent research provider, has providedwith the following research alert. Analysts at CFRA have summarized their opinion as follows:We cut our 12-month target to $92 from $103, based on about 20x our FY 27 (Jan.) EPS estimate of $4.57 (raised from $4.48; FY 28 raised to $4.98 from $4.90). While this multiple remains above the company's long-term average of 19x, it is still well below those of large-format peers. We maintain our Hold rating following a mixed Apr-Q result, as BJ's comparable sales growth continues to lag its largest competitors. We expect limited upside to earnings revisions given ongoing reinvestment in areas such as pricing. We also see incremental near-term headwinds emerging, including higher transportation costs as a result of the recent spike in fuel prices. Longer term, however, we remain more constructive as recently opened clubs continue to mature, with clubs typically reaching maturity within five years of opening (clubs opened within the last five years are growing at over 4x the chain average). BJ's expansion into Texas also appears encouraging, with early indicators for sales and membership trends tracking positively.

BJ's Wholesale Seen Regaining Growth Pace by 2027, UBS Says

BJ's Wholesale Club Holdings (BJ) is positioned to return to its long-term growth trajectory by 2027, supported by healthy membership trends and stronger customer engagement, UBS Securities said Sunday in a report.Early results from BJ's expansion into Texas have been stronger than expected, with membership signups running 33% ahead of plan and 100,000 members already enrolled in the state, UBS said. That performance may bolster confidence in BJ's ability to grow in competitive new markets, the report said.UBS also pointed to improving general-merchandise sales, noting that category growth accelerated to 7.1% in fiscal Q1, and highlighted additional opportunities tied to tariff-related supplier recoveries, which it expects BJ's to reinvest in pricing to strengthen customer value.UBS lowered its price target on BJ's stock to $109 from $117 and maintained its buy rating.Price: $84.42, Change: $-2.22, Percent Change: -2.56%
