Financial stocks advanced nearly 3% to lead gainers in midday trading on Wednesday after Australia's central bank on Tuesday raised its official cash rate to 4.35%.Westpac Banking (ASX:WBC) rose nearly 5% after Jarden said in a Tuesday note that the bank has "meaningfully" boosted its growth and risk appetite to achieve a larger balance sheet and higher revenue base to increase earnings.On the flip side, energy stocks shed nearly 2% as oil prices declined after President Donald Trump said the US will pause an operation to help ships pass through the Strait of Hormuz due to "great progress" on a deal with Iran.Woodside Energy Group (ASX:WDS) dropped 2%, and Yancoal Australia (ASX:YAL) declined 4%.

Yancoal Australia Falls After Reporting Lower Q1 Saleable Coal Production

Shares of Yancoal Australia (ASX:YAL) fell around 1% in recent Tuesday trade after the company reported in a late Monday Australian bourse filing that attributable saleable coal production for the first quarter ended March 31 was 9 million tonnes, down from 9.5 million tonnes a year earlier.Attributable run-of-mine coal production for the quarter fell to 11.3 million tonnes from 11.5 million tonnes a year ago.The average realized coal price was AU$146 per tonne, down from AU$157 per tonne in the March 2025 quarter.The company said its 2026 guidance remains unchanged, with attributable saleable production of 36.5 million to 40.5 million tonnes.

Yancoal Australia's Coal Output, Sales Slide in Q1

Yancoal Australia's (HKG:3668, ASX:YAL) saleable coal production fell 5% to 9 million tons in the first quarter of 2026 from 9.5 million tons in the year-ago period, a Monday filing with the Hong Kong bourse said.Sales slipped 2% to 8.2 million tons from 8.4 million tons in the prior-year period.The average realized price of coal slid 7% year over year to AU$146 per ton from AU$157 per ton previously, according to the filing.Production during the first quarter decreased 2% to 11.3 million tons from 11.5 million tons last year.

Australian Shares Flat; Virgin Australia Says Fiscal Year 2026 Guidance Unchanged, Fiscal H2 EBIT Expected to Rise

Australian shares were flat with a positive bias on Wednesday's close as investors weighed reports of a second round of peace talks between the US and Iran.The S&P/ASX 200 Index was little changed to close at 8,978.70.US President Donald Trump said talks with Iran could resume in Pakistan over the next ​two days, even as a US naval blockade ⁠on Iranian ports continued. Brent crude oil futures rose 1% to $95.77 per barrel.On Wall Street, the Nasdaq was up nearly 2% on Tuesday, and the S&P 500 climbed 1.2%.On the domestic front, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) cut its economic growth projections for Australia, with gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate now expected to come in at 2% in 2026, compared with the previous forecast of 2.1%, and 1.7% in 2027, down from the earlier forecast of 2.2%.Australia's private sector credit is projected to grow by 7.2% year over year this year, tracking at its fastest pace since 2022, before slowing to 5.7% year-over-year by late 2027, ANZ said in a report.Australian consumer spending rose 2.1% in March, month-on-month, driven by a sharp increase in fuel spending due to higher prices, according to NAB's consumer spend trend report.In company news, Virgin Australia Holdings (ASX:VGN) said that its fiscal year 2026 financial guidance remains unchanged, with the underlying earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) and underlying EBIT margin in the second half expected to be higher than the prior-year period. Yancoal Australia's (ASX:YAL) shares were up 1% in recent trading on Wednesday after the company said in an Australian bourse filing late on Tuesday that it entered into binding transaction documentation with EMR Capital Advisors, Kestrel Coal (EMR), Adaro Capital, and EMR Capital Management to acquire Kestrel Coal Group, which holds an 80% interest in the Kestrel coal mine joint venture in Queensland, for up to $2.4 billion.The consideration includes an upfront cash consideration of $1.85 billion, payable on completion, as well as contingent cash consideration of up to a maximum of $550 million.Completion of the acquisition is subject to the satisfaction of conditions precedent, including regulatory approvals, and is targeted towards the end of the third quarter.
