US Dollar Rises Early Monday, Focus on GDP, Personal Income, Warsh Speech

The US dollar rose against its major trading partners early Monday, with the focus this week on the second look at Q2 GDP, personal income, spending and price data for July on Wednesday and Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh's keynote address at the Fed's Jackson Hole Symposium on Friday.

Monday's schedule is light, with only the Chicago Fed's national activity index for July at 8:30 am

The pace of data releases picks up on Tuesday, with the Philadelphia Fed's nonmanufacturing report, weekly Redbook same-store sales, home price data, consumer confidence, new-home sales and the Richmond Fed's business conditions report all being released.

The GDP and personal income reports are due on Wednesday, in addition to data on mortgage applications, durable goods orders and weekly oil stocks.

The Fed's Jackson Hole conference is due to be held on Thursday and Friday and will feature Kevin Warsh's first keynote address as Fed chair on Friday as well as appearances by other monetary policy officials. Weekly jobless claims and natural gas stocks data, advance trade and inventory statistics, and the Kansas City Fed's manufacturing report are also expected on Thursday.

Other than Warsh's speech, Friday's highlights include the preliminary payrolls benchmark revision estimate from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the final University of Michigan consumer sentiment reading for August and services data from the Kansas City Fed.

A quick summary of foreign exchange activity heading into Monday:

EUR/USD fell to 1.1665 from 1.1679 at the Friday US close and 1.1704 at the same time Friday morning. There are no Eurozone data on Monday's schedule. The next European Central Bank meeting is scheduled for Sept. 10.

GBP/USD fell to 1.3628 from 1.3648 at the Friday US close and 1.3663 at the same time Friday morning. There are no UK data on Monday's schedule. The next Bank of England meeting is scheduled for Sept. 17.

USD/JPY rose to 159.2071 from 158.9862 at the Friday US close and 158.5551 at the same time Friday morning. There were no Japanese data released overnight. The next Bank of Japan meeting is scheduled for Sept. 17-18.

USD/CAD rose to 1.3844 from 1.3766 at the Friday US close and 1.3739 at the same time Friday morning. There are no Canadian data releases on Monday's schedule. The next Bank of Canada meeting is scheduled for Sept. 2.

Total Volume of Retail Sales in New Zealand Down in June Quarter

The total volume of retail sales in New Zealand in the June quarter in seasonally adjusted terms was NZ$26 billion, down 0.5% compared with the March quarter, according to a report released by Stats NZ on Monday.Higher fuel prices led to a sharp rise in fuel retail sales values during the quarter, but when excluding price changes, fuel retailing experienced the largest decline in sales volumes among the industries evaluated, economic indicators spokesperson Michelle Feyen said.The total value of seasonally adjusted retail sales was NZ$33 billion, up 0.9% compared with March, while the total value of actual retail sales was NZ$31 billion, up 6.6% from the June 2025 quarter.Nine of the 16 regions had higher seasonally adjusted retail sales values in the June quarter compared with the March quarter, per the report.

India's Forex Deposit Inflows Hit $65.4 Billion, RBI Says

India attracted nearly $65.4 billion through foreign currency non-resident, or FCNR(B), deposits under the Reserve Bank of India's special swap facility as of Aug. 21, the central bank said.That, combined with inflows through overseas foreign currency borrowings and external commercial borrowings, brought total forex inflows under the facility to $72.85 billion, according to the RBI.

New Zealand Transport Motor Vehicle Registrations Fall in July

The number of transport motor vehicle registrations in New Zealand in July licensed for 12 months fell to 3.8 million from 3.9 million in the same period last year, according to figures released by Stats NZ on Monday.Currently licensed transport and passenger motor vehicles across the country includes almost 2.3 million cars; 631,221 trucks; 606,013 trailers and caravans; 32,965 motorcycles; 26,557 omnibuses and service coaches; as well as 13,230 taxis.Meanwhile, the total number of commercial vehicles in July was 3,350, down compared with last year's 4,379.
