Total Volume of Retail Sales in New Zealand Down in June Quarter

The total volume of retail sales in New Zealand in the June quarter in seasonally adjusted terms was NZ$26 billion, down 0.5% compared with the March quarter, according to a report released by Stats NZ on Monday.

Higher fuel prices led to a sharp rise in fuel retail sales values during the quarter, but when excluding price changes, fuel retailing experienced the largest decline in sales volumes among the industries evaluated, economic indicators spokesperson Michelle Feyen said.

The total value of seasonally adjusted retail sales was NZ$33 billion, up 0.9% compared with March, while the total value of actual retail sales was NZ$31 billion, up 6.6% from the June 2025 quarter.

Nine of the 16 regions had higher seasonally adjusted retail sales values in the June quarter compared with the March quarter, per the report.

Cargo traffic at the Port of Los Angeles is expected to fall in the week ending Sept. 5, according to data from ship-tracking system Port Optimizer.A total of 133,355 20-foot equivalent units, a standardized measure of cargo capacity, are projected to reach the port in the week, the data showed. That volume reflects a 12% decrease from the previous week and a 46% rise from a year earlier.Twenty-three freight vessels are scheduled to arrive at the port in the week ending Sept. 5, the data showed. That compares with 23 vessels scheduled this week and 25 in the week ending Aug. 29.
