The S&P/TSX Composite Index was up 26 points mid-morning Friday, led by gains in energy and base metals.
The energy sector, up 1.1%, was the best performer, while base metals was 0.6% higher.
Limiting gains was the information technology sector, which fell 2.4%.
In economic news, Canadian wholesale sales, excluding oil, oil products, other hydrocarbons, oilseed and grain, rose 2.8% on the month to C$92.5 billion in June, its fourth increase in five months, Statistics Canada said Friday.
Sales rose across all seven subsectors, led by machinery, equipment and supplies, which increased 4.8% monthly to C$20.1 billion, said Statistics Canada in a statement.
