Definity Financial (DFY.TO) said Thursday it expects catastrophe losses in July and August to reduce underwriting income by about CA$130 million net of reinsurance recoveries.
It equals CA$0.79 per share after taxes and reinsurance, the company said.
The losses are due to severe rainstorms and flooding in Ontario and Alberta in July, as well as flooding in Ontario and wildfires in British Columbia in August.
Definity said its third-quarter catastrophe losses so far are "trending meaningfully" above the full-quarter market consensus estimate of CA$93 million. The company plans to provide a finalized update for the quarter in the first half of October.
The company's shares closed down CA$1.29 to CA$73.65 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
