CN Rail Testing Three Hybrid Locomotives

By

Canadian National Railway (CNR.TO) said Friday it is testing three hybrid locomotives and is working to transform two additional locomotives into hybrid-electric platforms by the end of the year.

CN expects to improve fuel efficiency, reliability, and performance, and reduce emissions, a statement said.

In a 2025 pilot project, CN said it achieved up to a 50% improvement in fuel efficiency, fewer traditional engine-related failures, and lower noise and emissions in the communities where CN operates. Testing was conducted in both hot and extreme cold conditions.

"This milestone represents another important step in CN's locomotive innovation and modernization journey," said Chief Operating Officer Patrick Whitehead. "By repowering and enhancing existing yard locomotives, we are being more efficient while supporting service to our customers and more sustainable operations for the long term."

CN Rail shares were last seen down C$0.57 to C$177.21 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
