Brookfield to Acquire Battery Storage Developer Aypa Power From Blackstone in $7 Billion Deal

Brookfield Asset Management (BAM) said on Wednesday, that it had entered into an agreement to acquire Aypa Power, an Austin-based utility-scale energy storage provider in a $7 billion deal, from Blackstone (BX).Aypa is the largest standalone battery storage developer in North America, with about 6.5 gigawatts of operating, under-construction and contracted battery storage capacity, supported by a development pipeline exceeding 20 GW across the US and Canada.The transaction, which values Aypa at an equity value of $3 billion, includes its operating, under-construction and contracted battery storage assets, its development platform, and its roughly 200-person workforce.The deal is aimed at providing Brookfield a dominant position in the North American battery energy storage systems market.In its press release, Brookfield noted that Aypa's portfolio was 95% contracted, with long-term agreements with investment-grade customers, resulting in predictable cash flows for the company.Besides this, the investment management giant plans to leverage its own operating and development experience to accelerate Aypa's pipeline.Jehangir Vevaina, the Chief Investment Officer at Brookfield Energy, said battery storage has become "increasingly critical" to the "reliability and resilience" of modern power systems, while noting that the two companies together could deliver integrated energy solutions to large-scale power customers.

NovaRed Mining Amends Trojan-Condor Corridor Option

NovaRed Mining (NRED.CN) agreed to amend its property option, to buy a 70% interest in an additional five mineral tenures comprising approximately 4,573.82 hectares, known collectively as the Trojan-Condor Corridor, it said late Wednesday.Upon Canadian Securities Exchange (CSE) acceptance for filing of the amending agreement, the company must issue 3-million units in its capital to the optionor, it said. Additional claims lie adjacent to the nine claims that comprise the company's existing Wilmac Copper-Gold project.Each unit will consist of one common share and a two-year transferable share purchase warrant entitling the optionor to buy a share for C$1.80. NovaRed must also pay C$100,000 to the optionor by Aug. 31, 2026, and C$150,000 in addition by Mar. 31, 2027.The company will also have to fund C$8.5 million in exploration spending on the claims, including C$400,000 by Oct. 1, 2026, and C$2 million in 2027, in order to exercise the option, NovaRed added.Shares of the company closed unchanged at C$0.60 on Wednesday on the CSE.

CFIB Survey Shows Small Business Confidence up, But Manufacturing Sector Still Struggles

Small business confidence rose to 58.3 points in July, about 8 points above June, but confidence among manufacturers continued to lag at 53.7 index points, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) reported in its latest Monthly Business Barometer.The survey was conducted from July 7 to 13, and gathered 520 responses from CFIB members, before the latest round of U.S. tariffs were announced.The manufacturing sector's confidence, which hasn't recovered since 2023, has been hit harder by tariffs than by either the 2008-09 recession or the pandemic, the CFIB reported. The sector is contending with higher shipping and receiving costs. Input product costs were also impacting 77% of manufacturers, almost double the usual share for this sector."As some manufacturers are considering US production, we need a more competitive fiscal environment here at home and policies that would encourage businesses to stay and invest in Canada," CFIB director of economics Andreea Bourgeois wrote.The survey also found that 60% of small businesses cited fuel prices as the top cost constraint.
