Canada's April International Transactions in Securities Generate Largest Inflow of Funds Since October 2025

International transactions in securities generated a net inflow in funds of $58.3 billion to the Canadian economy over April, the largest inflow since October 2025, said the country's statistical agency on Tuesday.This was a result of international investors acquiring $46.9 billion of Canadian securities in April, led by a record investment in federal government bonds, said Statistics Canada in a statement. Meanwhile, Canadian investors sold $11.4 billion of international securities, following five consecutive monthly investments totalling $70.3 billion, it added.StatsCan noted non-resident investors acquired an "unprecedented" $38.5 billion of Canadian government bonds in April. International investment in federal government bonds reached a record $27.7 billion, for a total of $47.8 billion so far in 2026. While United States investors were the main contributors to the investment activity in federal bonds in April, increased purchases from Asian and European investors also contributed.In addition, StatsCan noted, international investors acquired $10.6 billion of provincial government bonds in April, their largest investment since January 2025. In April 2026, they also added $10.2 billion of corporate bonds to their holdings, led by instruments issued by financial institutions.StatsCan said Canadian investors reduced their exposure to foreign securities by $11.4 billion in April, the first divestment since October 2025. The reduction was in both bonds and shares.Canadian divestment in international bonds amounted to $8.4 billion in April and targeted non-U.S. foreign bonds (-$5.9 billion) and U.S. government bonds (-$3.0 billion), it added.Finally, StatsCan noted Canadian investors decreased their holdings of foreign equity securities by $3.0 billion in April. Despite the growth in US share prices, as measured by the S&P 500 composite index, investors sold $1.6 billion of US shares, mainly shares of large capitalization technology firms. Similarly, they divested $1.4 billion in non-US shares, mainly European shares.

May Home Sales Rebound as Canadian Housing Market Holds Balance, BMO Says

Canada got the full run of the country's resale housing market data for May earlier Tuesday, said Bank of Montreal (BMO).Existing home sales were down 5.1% year over year in the month, but improved a "solid" 5.5% in seasonally-adjusted terms from the prior month.This is still a balanced overall national housing market, with pockets of ongoing weakness at the regional level -- for example, the Greater Toronto Area, Southwestern Ontario and British Columbia -- and further at the segment level, such as smaller condos, noted the bank.The national benchmark price was still down 3.9% from a year ago, but some markets are starting to look less difficult as Canada exits spring. New listings were down 1% in the month, or 7.9% from a year ago, which is helping keep the market in balance overall, stated BMO.The Bank of Canada is firmly on hold for now, which offers no mortgage rate relief in the variable space, although some of the upside risk to fixed mortgage rates has quickly evaporated with lower oil prices and Government of Canada yields, it pointed out.Still, the affordability and investment calculus isn't quite there yet to trigger a meaningful rebound in activity and prices. But, the longer Canada sits on current prices, with stable sub-4% mortgage rates and steadily growing incomes, the closer it will be to the harder-hit markets scraping out a bottom, added the bank. May Home Sales Data Shows Activity Picking Up, Says The Canadian Real Estate Association

The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) on Tuesday released statistics on the country's home sales for May.In summary: National home sales jumped 5.5% month over month; Actual (not seasonally adjusted) monthly activity came in 5.1% below May 2025; The number of newly listed properties edged down 1% on a month-over-month basis; The MLS Home Price Index (HPI) inched down by 0.1% month over month and was down 4.1% on a year-over-year basis; The actual (not seasonally adjusted) national average sale price was up 1.5% on a year-over-year basis in May 2026.CREA said there were 4.8 months of inventory on a national basis at the end of May, down from 5.1 months in February, March and April. This remains very close to the long-term average for the measure of five months, it added, noting that based on one standard deviation above and below that long-term average, a seller's market would be below 3.6 months and a buyer's market would be above 6.4 months.The non-seasonally adjusted national average home price was $702,079 in May, up 1.5% from the same month last year, CREA said. It was the highest monthly national average home price in two years and the first time the measure has tipped above the $700,000 mark in 23 months, it added."Like the weather in many parts of Canada this year, the spring market appears to have been delayed by a month or so, but the May numbers left little doubt that activity is now picking up," said Garry Bhaura, CREA chair, in a statement.

Canada's Households Flush With Liquid Financial Assets Keep Economy Above Water, Says BMO

Canadian households hold more than $8 trillion in stocks, bonds and currency deposits, and these liquid assets have been growing at a more than 10% year-over-year clip since mid-2024, said Bank of Montreal (BMO).According to BMO, conversations about household finances usually center around debt and it noted the debt-to-disposable income ratio did edge up in seasonally-adjusted terms in Q1, and the debt service ratio remains elevated.However, the run-up in asset values has been a big offset, it said.As a ratio, liquid financial assets now weigh in at roughly 260% of total financial liabilities, a record high going back to the 1990s, noted BMO. "Sturdy, albeit fading, disposable income growth and savings rates have helped, but the roaring bull market is clearly the driver," it added.This positive wealth/liquidity effect is helping through a period of higher gasoline prices and upward mortgage rate resets, said BMO. But, an equity bull market can be easy-come/easy-go, and tends to be concentrated at the higher end of the income spectrum, it added."For now, though, add this to the factors keeping Canada's economy above water," BMO said.

Rentals Taking A Bigger Slice of Canada's Housing Supply Market, Says BMO

Canadian housing starts continue to hold up well, coming in at 261,000 annualized units in May, said Bank of Montreal (BMO).That leaves the year-to-date average at 253,000 and is in line with 261,000 over the latest 12 months, noted the bank.There's still plenty of churn below the surface, however, as markets adjust to prevailing conditions, pointed out BMO. Most notably, the combined condo and homeownership starts have plunged below 100,000 on a 12-month basis for the first time --excluding the Great Recession -- since 1999.The gap has been filled by the sharp increase in purpose-built rental starts, to 116,000 over the past years, stated the bank.Notably, the number of rentals under construction across Canadian census metropolitan areas of almost 200,000 now exceeds combined ownership/condo units under construction for the first time.This gap will only widen in the years ahead as new condo starts have evaporated across some major cities, such as Toronto.BMO continues to believe in two major takeaways: Rents, especially in smaller units, will be under pressure for some time yet. High Tide Shares Jump 15% After Hours as Its Fiscal Q2 Profit and Record Revenue Top Estimates

High Tide (HITI.V, HITI), up 15% at look in after-hours Nasdaq trading, after the cannabis retailer on Monday said it swung to a fiscal second-quarter profit on record revenue, with both earnings and sales exceeding analyst estimates.The company reported a profit of C$24,000, or C$0.01 per share, in the quarter ended April 30, compared to a loss of C$2.8 million, or C$0.04, in the prior-year period. FactSet expected a loss of C$0.02 per share in the last quarter.The company reported record revenue C$179.3 million for the period, compared to C$137.8 million during the same period last year, an increase of 30% year-over-year, the fastest growth rate in 11 quarters. It exceeded FactSet analysts' consensus estimate of C$171.2 million.High tide's adjusted EBITDA stood at record C$13.9 million in the second quarter. This was up 73% compared to last year, marking the fastest growth rate in nine quarters, and up 21% sequentially despite there being three fewer days in the quarter, the company said."Our second quarter results highlight the strength of High Tide's diversified growth strategy and our ability to execute at a high level across multiple geographies. Although Canada boasts the lowest net debt to gross domestic product ratio among G-7 peers, it's a small fish in a sea of global savings, said TD.Being highly susceptible to importing international financial conditions, the better debt position may not fully shield Canada from a negative turn in market sentiment targeted at countries whose fiscal houses are in more disrepair, writes the bank in a note to clients.Specifically, elevated and rising United States borrowing needs will dominate the supply of high-quality public-debt issuance for years to come, increasing the competition and cost for other sovereign and high-quality corporate debt, stated TD.Canada has no control over the trajectory of U.S. fiscal finances and investment demands, but it does directly absorb the market implications, pointed out the bank.Governments should be cautious in resting on the laurels of currently having lower debt ratios than peer countries and be mindful that economic cycles don't follow straight lines, added TD. Downside surprises on growth raise the specter of greater deficit borrowing and an even faster-growing debt burden, particularly under intensifying demand for more supportive government policies on everything from affordable housing to social safety nets, to military spending, to supply chain resilience, and to clean energy alternatives.This will be occurring against a backdrop of large and growing U.S. deficits that risk pressuring up global interest rates, leaving smaller borrowers to compete in that space by either cutting back on spending plans or paying a higher rate to attract investor funds, according to the bank.In the competition for international investor dollars, high demands among governments also risk crowding out the needs of the private sector, ultimately impinging on competitiveness and economic growth.

Vast Majority of Small Firms in Canada Don't Feel Supported by the Government, Says CFIB

Nearly three in four (73%) of small firms say they don't feel supported by the Canadian federal government, and the spring session did little to change that, according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB).While the spring economic update contained a few positive measures, such as a reduction in Canada Pension Plan (CPP) premiums and the Employee Ownership Trust tax exemption being made permanent, it didn't do much to improve small business conditions, noted CFIB on Monday.Most (58%) small firms continue to feel pressure from rising fuel costs, with taxes squeezing margins for nearly half (48%), it stated.Four in 10 also say economic/political uncertainty and other operating costs are making it difficult to do business.CFIB urges the government to return in the fall with a real focus on Main Street, starting with reducing the federal small business tax rate from 9% to 6%.
