Research Alert: CFRA Maintains Sell Opinion On Shares Of Edison International

CFRA, an independent research provider, has providedwith the following research alert. Analysts at CFRA have summarized their opinion as follows:We keep our 12-month target at $48, 7.9x our next-12-month EPS view, a discount to peers to reflect the Eaton Fire liability and weak investor sentiment toward California utilities. We lift our 2026 EPS view by $0.03 to $6.11 and 2027's by $0.26 to $6.52. We see EIX facing material near-term uncertainty from the Eaton Fire, with the company explicitly unable to estimate a range of losses despite having recorded $1.3 billion in settlements as of Q1 2026. We think the company's aggressive capital program and commitment to no new equity through 2030 are supported by strong regulatory visibility, but rising interest expense and potential affordability pushback create execution risk to the 5%-7% long term EPS growth target. With $5.5 billion in debt maturities over 2026-2027 and elevated current market rates, we see refinancing risk with material increases in interest expense as a possibility. In our opinion, shares reflect a meaningful tilt toward risk rather than reward. We remain at Sell.

Research Alert: Eix Q1: Rate Increase Offsets Cost Recovery Non-recurral; Growth Targets Weak

CFRA, an independent research provider, has providedwith the following research alert. Analysts at CFRA have summarized their opinion as follows:Edison International reported Q1 2026 core EPS of $1.42 vs. $1.37 prior year, driven by 2025 General Rate Case rate relief, partially offset by the absence of $0.30 per share interest expense benefits from TKM Settlement Agreement cost recoveries. GAAP EPS declined to $1.38 from $3.73 due to the absence of $908M in prior-year non-core benefits. Operating revenue increased 7.7% to $4,103M while cash flow from operations grew 16.6% to $1,427M, though interest expense rose substantially to $524M from $301M due to capital funding requirements. Management affirmed 2026 core EPS guidance of $5.90-$6.20 and maintained confidence in 5%-7% core EPS growth from 2025 to 2030. We think the company's long-term EPS goals are overly optimistic as we forecast EPS growth closer to the 3%-4% range, suggesting EIX has the lowest earnings trajectory among peers with an 8.9% average, making even the 5%-7% target appear uncompetitive, in our view.

Edison International Q1 Earnings Highlight $41 Billion Capex Plan, 7% Rate Base Growth

Edison International (EIX) reported Q1 earnings Tuesday and outlined a $38 billion to $41 billion capital plan through 2030 to support grid investments and reliability, and to meet rising demand, the company said. The company expects the rate base to grow at about 7% annually from 2025 to 2030, reaching almost $67.9 billion by 2030, driven by infrastructure and electrification investments.Annual investments are expected to range between $7.3 billion and $9.1 billion through 2030, including California Public Utilities Commission- and FERC-regulated projects and advanced metering programs, the company added.CAISO-awarded FERC transmission projects form a key part of Edison International's long-term investment plan, with additional opportunities beyond 2030, including about $2 billion of projects supporting grid expansion and reliability, the company said. The advanced metering infrastructure program represents a total investment of about $3.1 billion, with roughly 50% allocated between 2026 and 2030 and the remaining 50% scheduled for 2031 to 2033.Southern California Edison, a unit of Edison International, holds variable interests in certain power purchase agreements, limiting its financial exposure, the company said. These agreements provided 6.06 gigawatts of contracted capacity as of March 31, 2026, up from 5.30 GW a year earlier, with payments rising to $204 million from $172 million, recoverable through customer rates. The company said these arrangements carry no significant loss exposure, as they do not guarantee debt or equity support and rely on regulated cost-recovery mechanisms, thereby ensuring stable financial positioning.
