The US dollar weakened against the loonie Wednesday afternoon, as bond yields eased after the US Treasury Department said it would more than double the size of its government debt repurchases from a maximum $2 billion to $4 billion.
The US dollar edged down 0.6% to C$1.382 on last look.
The change is effective Sept. 9, and will continue through Nov. 4, a Treasury statement said.
Comex gold December futures jumped 2.8% to $4,544.40, the highest level since early June.
West Texas Intermediate September crude oil futures, the US benchmark, climbed 2% to $86.69 per barrel. October Brent oil futures, the international benchmark, climbed 1.3% to $92.22 a barrel.
