Britain's monthly retail sales rose 1.2% in May after a revised 1% decline in April, according to data from the Office for National Statistics published Friday.
Analysts expected a 0.5% increase for the month.
On a yearly basis, UK retail sales jumped 3.2%, against the revised 0.1% growth previously and the expected 1.9% rise.
Excluding automotive fuel, retail sales were up 1.2% month over month and 4.6% annually, following the revised fall of 0.1% and a 1.1% gain earlier, respectively. The figures compare with the consensus estimates of a 0.4% monthly growth and a 3.3% yearly increase.
