US President Donald Trump paused the scheduled 50% tariffs on Canadian imports for three days, following a tentative bilateral trade deal, while suggesting a potential revival of the canceled Keystone XL pipeline, Trump posted on Truth Social on Wednesday.
Initially proposed in 2008 by developer TC Energy (TRP), the 1,209-mile Keystone XL expansion was designed to transport up to 830,000 barrels per day of crude oil from the oil sands of Alberta, Canada, to Nebraska, connecting to US refining markets in the Gulf Coast.
"The great Keystone XL Pipeline, long ago killed by Sleepy Joe Biden, may be awoken from the grave," Trump posted.
The project faced years of intense legal battles, political friction, and environmental protests before its cross-border permit was revoked by President Joe Biden on his first day in office in January 2021, leading project backer TC Energy to officially terminate and abandon the venture later that year.
While reviving the massive infrastructure asset would face substantial regulatory, financial, and legal hurdles, Trump's latest remarks signal a shifting policy landscape for North American energy corridors.
