A widespread power outage reportedly hit Tanzania on Saturday following multiple technical failures, according to media outlets, citing state-owned power utility Tanesco.
The power outage from 7 p.m. local time, resulted from faults on three transmission lines and a substation malfunction, Tanzania Insight reported. The incidents triggered the grid's protection system, shutting down operations to avoid further damage.
Businesses and industries have reportedly been affected, including Tanzania Railways, the Standard Gauge Railway, and the Benjamin Mkapa Hospital.
Electricity was mostly restored by late evening, as per reports, while a comprehensive investigation was launched to identify the root causes of the multiple simultaneous failures.
The government said the automatic shutdown demonstrated the capability of the grid, which is equipped with modern digital technology, to respond to abnormal conditions without manual intervention, local news outlet The Citizen reported.
Tanesco did not immediately respond to' request for comment.
