The S&P/TSX Composite Index, which rose 320 points in earlier trade, pared its gains and was last seen up near 190 points mid-morning Friday.
The bounce followed Thursday's sharp drop to a six-week low.
The best performing sectors were information technology and base metals, up 3% and 1.3%, respectively. Gold and other precious metal commodity prices were also higher.
Energy fell 1.2% on last look, tracking lower oil prices, followed by the healthcare sector, down 0.7%.
In stocks, Descartes Group (DSG.TO) rose 4.4% to CA$102.90 after it reported a second-quarter earnings beat Thursday evening.
