The S&P/TSX Composite Index jumped 310 points mid-morning Wednesday after President Trump announced a three-day pause on the 50% tariffs that were due to be imposed on C$28 billion of Canadian goods today.
Negotiations between the two countries are continuing. Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement acknowledging that "substantial progress has been made, although there is important work still to be done."
Commodities and telecommunications sectors were the best performers mid-morning: Miners were up 2.5%, boosted by stronger gold prices, followed by the energy (+0.8%) and telecommunications sector, which is 1% higher.
The financials sector was the worst performer, down 1.2%.
