The US National Weather Service on Tuesday said the Intermountain West, Northern Plains, and Upper Great Lakes are experiencing a significant heatwave, with intensity expected to peak through midweek.
The heatwave is likely to remain in parts of Northern Plains and Midwest until this weekend, the agency said.
Meanwhile, potentially life-threatening flash and arroyo flooding risks are likely to be prevalent in southwest Texas through Thursday due to excessive rainfall.
The NWS issued an extreme heat warning early Tuesday for a majority of Minnesota, except for Albert Lea, Rochester, Marshall, Worthington, Pipestone, Windom, Roseau and Thief River Falls. The state is primarily served by Otter Tail (OTTR) unit Otter Tail Power, Allette (ALE) subsidiary Minnesota Power, Xcel Energy (XEL), and Alliant Energy (LNT).
A similar warning was raised for most of North Dakota excluding Crosby, Minot, Rugby, Devil's Lake, Langdon, Grafton, and Bottineau. Xcel Energy, MDU Resources (MDU) unit Montana-Dakota Utilities and Otter Tail Power are among the major electric service providers in the state.
Michigan's Houghton, Ironwood, Marquette, Iron Mountain, Escanaba and Menominee were also placed under the extreme heat warning watch. WEC Energy Group (WEC) subsidiaries Upper Michigan Energy Resources and We Energies, Upper Peninsula Power Company, and Xcel Energy are among the major service providers in these places.
In Montana, an extreme heat warning was issued for Billings, Red Lodge, Glendive, Miles City, Harlowtown, Broadus, Circle, Terry, Sidney, and Ekalaka. Northwestern Energy (NWE) and Montana-Dakota Utilities are among the primary service providers in these places.
Affected areas in Utah include included Wendover, Logan, Brigham City, Provo, Tooele, Park City, Ogden, Salt Lake City, Duchesne, Green River, Price, Manti, Delta, Nephi, and Richfield. The state primarily falls under the service area of PacifiCorp's Rocky Mountain Power.
Also covered under the same warning were Wisconsin's Hayward, Park Falls, Rice Lake, and Eau Claire, where Xcel Energy is the major service provider; and parts of Yuma and Parker in Arizona, majorly served by Pinnacle West Capital (PNW) unit Arizona Public Service Company.
An extreme heat warning was also issued for Wilmington in Delaware, Philadelphia in Pennsylvania, and Trenton and Newark in New Jersey.
The NWS issued an extreme heat warning for Wyoming's Sheridan, Cody, Greybull, Buffalo, Worland, Thermopolis, Dubois, Riverton, Casper, Pinedale, Afton, Big Piney, Kemmerer, Jackson, Lander, and Rocksprings. Meanwhile, a red flag warning was raised for Baggs, Shirley Basin, Medicine Bow, Elk Mountain, Garrett, Bill, Glenrock, Lance Creek, Douglas, Rusk, Glendo, Wheatland, Torrington, Chug Water, Pine Bluffs, and Cheyenne. The state primarily falls under the service area of Rocky Mountain Power.
In California, an extreme heat warning was raised for Blythe, El Centro Imperium, Palm Springs, Campo, El Cajon, Mount Laguna, Julian Borrego Springs, Indio, Escondido, Temecula, San Clemente, Hemet, Beaumont, Santa Ana, San Bernardino, Riverside, Anaheim, Chino, Ontario, Wrightwood, Los Angeles, Burbank, Big Bear Lake, Santa Clarita, Malibu, Palmdale, Santa Barbara, and Oxnard. A red flag warning was issued for Willow Creek, Weaverville, and areas near Garberville, Trinidad, Crescent City and Mount Shasta.
PacifiCorp's Pacific Power, PG&E (PCG) subsidiary Pacific Gas and Electric, Edison International's (EIX) Southern California Edison, and Sempra Energy (SRE) unit San Diego Gas & Electric are the major electricity service providers in these places.
The NWS issued a red flag warning for Nebraska's Harrison, Chadron, Alliance, Scottsbluff, Bridgeport, Harrisburg, Kimball, and Sidney. A major part of the state is covered under the service area of regional transmission organization Southwest Power Pool, with Midcontinent ISO also serving some areas.
South Dakota's Faith, Dupree, Fourche, Spearfish, Sturgis, Rapid City, Wall, Philip, Kadoka, Edgemont, Hot Springs, Hermosa, Lemmon and Pine Ridge were also placed under a red flag warning watch. Xcel Energy, Northwestern Energy, Montana-Dakota Utilities, Otter Tail Power, and Black Hills Energy are among the major electric utility service providers operating in the state.
In Texas, the NWS issued a flash flood warning for Uvalde, Hondo, Big Lake and Fort Stockton, which was also covered under a flood warning.
Flood warnings were also issued for small pockets of Illinois and Louisiana.
