NWS Warns of Heavy Rains in Virginia, Carolinas; Dangerous Heat in Southern Plains, Lower Mississippi Valley

The US National Weather Service said heavy rains are expected to move to Virginia and the Carolinas on Friday from the Mid-Atlantic.

Meanwhile, the Southern Plains and the Lower Mississippi Valley are likely to experience continued dangerous heat, with similar conditions expected to expand to the Southwest.

The NWS issued an extreme heat warning early Friday for almost the entirety of Louisiana, except for Cameron, and small parts of Abbeville and Morgan City. Entergy's (ETR) Louisiana subsidiaries, Cleco, and American Electric Power (AEP) subsidiary Southwestern Electric Power Company are the major power suppliers in Louisiana.

A similar warning was raised for Oklahoma's Oklahoma City, Chickasha, Ada, Duncan, Atoka, Ardmore, and Durant, primarily served by OGE Energy (OGE) unit Oklahoma Gas & Electric and AEP subsidiary Public Service Co. of Oklahoma.

Affected areas in Texas include Wichita Falls, Gainesville, Sherman, Paris, Gainesville, Bowie, Decatur, Jacksboro, Graham, Fort Worth, Granbury, Dallas, Cleburne, Stephenville, Waxahachie, Denton, Canton, Emory, Sulphur Springs, Tyler, Lufkin, Jasper, Woodville, Newton, Kerbyville, Orange, Beaumont, Kountze, and Port Arthur. These places are primarily served by Sempra Energy (SRE) unit Oncor, TXNM Energy's (TXNM) Texas-New Mexico Power, Entergy's Texas unit and CenterPoint Energy (CNP).

Also covered under an extreme heat warning were Mississippi's Gulfport, McComb, Vicksburg, Jackson, Brookhaven, and Natchez. A severe thunder storm warning was raised for Grenada. Southern Company (SO) subsidiary Mississippi Power and Entergy's Mississippi unit are the major service providers in the state.

The NWS also issued extreme heat warnings for El Dorado in Arkansas, primarily served by Entergy Arkansas; and Las Vegas and Beatty in Nevada, which falls under the service area of Berkshire Hathaway Energy unit NV Energy.

A similar warning was also raised for Arizona's Kingman, Lake Havasu City, Bullhead City, Yuma, Parker, Gila Bend, Dateland, Ajo, Wickenburg, Phoenix, Casa Grande, Globe, Tucson, San Carlos, Safford, Oracle, and Green Valley. Meanwhile, a flash flood warning was raised for Page. Arizona is primarily served by Pinnacle West Capital (PNW) unit Arizona Public Service Company, and UNS Energy subsidiaries Unisource and Tucson Electric Power.

In California, an extreme heat warning was issued for Blythe, El Centro Imperial, Palm Springs, Twentynine Palms, Baker, Death Valley, Mount Laguna, Julian, Borrego Springs, Indio, and Beaumont. A red flag warning was raised for Tulelake, Macdoel, Yreka, Mount Shasta, Alturas, Likely, and Fort Jones.

PacifiCorp's Pacific Power, PG&E (PCG) subsidiary Pacific Gas and Electric, Edison International's (EIX) Southern California Edison, and Sempra Energy (SRE) unit San Diego Gas & Electric are the major electricity service providers in these places.

A red flag warning was also raised for Oregon's Lakeview, Klamath Falls, Chiloquin, Chemult, Crater Lake, Bly, Paisley, and Silver Lake, primarily served by Pacific Power.

The NWS issued a flash flood warning for Georgia's Dalton, served by Southern Company unit Georgia Power; and Alabama's Gadsden and areas near Huntsville, which was placed under a flood warning. Southern Company subsidiary Alabama Power is the major service provider in Alabama.

Flood warnings were also issued for parts of Illinois, Ohio, and Indiana.

US power prices varied widely across major markets at 4 p.m. ET, with PJM posting the highest price at $91.48 per megawatt-hour and an intraday peak of $543.30/MWh, according to data from GridStatus.io.Electric Reliability Council of Texas' real-time LMP stood at $28.13/MWh at 4 p.m. ET. Net load was 48.33 GW, with natural gas making up the largest share of generation at 38.5%.California Independent System Operator's real-time LMP came in at $37.09/MWh at 4 p.m. ET. Net load totaled 8.56 GW, while solar led the generation mix at 55.3%. The session's intraday peak reached $100.02/MWh at 6:50 a.m. ET.Southwest Power Pool's real-time LMP reached $37.65/MWh at 4 p.m. ET. Net load stood at 48.08 GW, with natural gas accounting for the largest share of generation at 44.6%.PJM's real-time LMP was $91.48/MWh at 4 p.m. ET. Net load totaled 116.95 GW, with gas accounting for the largest share of the generation mix at 47.1%.
