Sentiment among major Japanese manufacturers improved in June, with the Reuters Tankan Index for manufacturers rising to 13 from 8 in the previous month, according to the monthly poll released on Wednesday.
The reading beat the Trading Economics forecast of 9 points, and marked the highest level since March's 18-point reading.
Meanwhile, the Reuters Tankan Index for non-manufacturers also rose to 32 points in June from 29 in May.
The manufacturers' index is forecast to stay at 13 points in September, while the non-manufacturers' index is predicted at 19 points.
