The Indian government approved Tuesday an incentive scheme starting from Sept. 1 to accelerate domestic piped natural gas connections by rewarding city gas distribution companies with lower-priced domestic gas allocations.
Currently standing at 17.4 million connections, the initiative incentivizes CGD companies to convert unbilled connections into active service and expand networks into new areas, according to a statement.
Under the new two-tranche, six-month scheme structure, eligible CGDs will receive an additional 200 standard cubic meter of lower-priced domestic APM gas for every incremental billed connection achieved above specific threshold levels, it stated.
This cheap allocation offsets costlier imported LNG used in their transport segments, slashing overall gas-sourcing costs and reducing capital expenditure payback periods from 10 years to roughly three years to drive rapid household connectivity, it added.
