Amazon.com's (AMZN) Leo subsidiary filed with the US Federal Communications Commission to launch and operate a new constellation of up to 5,105 satellites designed to connect compatible mobile devices directly from space.
The network would provide voice, data, messaging, and emergency services in areas without cell coverage with satellite deployment beginning in 2028, Amazon said Monday in a statement.
The satellites will link directly to mobile devices using designated radio frequencies, while separate high-capacity links will connect the satellites to Amazon's ground stations.
Amazon Leo said the system will operate alongside its existing broadband satellites, and Globalstar's (GSAT) HIBLEO and C-3 constellations.
