New Zealand Grants 1st Offshore Exploration Permit After Ban Reversal

New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals granted Australian company EnZed Energy a 12-year exploration permit for the Taranaki Basin, the first since the offshore exploration ban was lifted in July 2025, according to a statement from Resources Minister Shane Jones on Wednesday.The 546-square-kilometer permit covers the Kaheru prospect, where Enzed will conduct a staged exploration program beginning with seismic data and geological studies."As the first new offshore petroleum exploration permit granted since the ban was reversed, it is a clear signal that confidence is returning and investors are once again prepared to back New Zealand's resource potential," Jones said.The award came six months after the closure of the application process. It is expected to facilitate the understanding of the country's remaining resource potential considering that existing gas fields are maturing.New Zealand's proven and probable natural gas reserves stood at 731 petajoules as of Jan. 1, down 23% from a year earlier and the lowest level on record, the statement said.

MBA US Mortgage Applications Decline in Week Ended July 24 as Mortgage Rates Rise Further

Mortgage applications fell by 6.4% in the week ended July 24, with both refinancing activity and new home applications pushed lower by an increase in 30-year fixed mortgage rates, data released by the Mortgage Bankers Association Wednesday showed.This follows a 1.9% increase in overall activity in the week ended July 17.Applications for refinancing loans fell by 10%, while new purchase applications declined by a seasonally adjusted 4%.The average contract interest rate for 30-year fixed mortgages with loan balances of $832,750 or less rose to 6.76% from 6.69% in the previous week, hitting its highest point since August according to MBA."This upward trajectory in rates continues to significantly impact refinance borrowers, with a 10% decline in refinance applications, including a steeper drop in government refinances," said Joel Kan, MBA's vice president and deputy chief economist. "Despite housing inventory increasing in certain markets, higher rates have added to ongoing affordability challenges for many homebuyers, which drove the decrease in purchase activity over the week."

India Curtails 8,133 GWh of Solar Power in April-June to Maintain Grid Stability

India curtailed about 8,133 gigawatt-hours of solar power during the April-June period this year to maintain grid security, the government said on Tuesday.In a written statement to the Council of States, or the Rajya Sabha, on Tuesday, Minister of State for New & Renewable Energy and Power Shripad Naik said "solar power curtailment and restriction are being carried out to maintain grid security and due to mismatch between commissioning of transmission lines and [renewable energy] projects."About 2,417 GWh of solar power was curtailed in April, 3,235 GWh in May, and 2,481 GWh in June, according to the statement.Temporary measures, including the use of available transmission margins through the Temporary General Network Access, are being undertaken to evacuate power until the planned transmission systems are commissioned, wherever feasible, the statement said.The government is implementing renewable energy curtailment for reliable and secure operation of the grid, the statement added.
