Retail gross margin expanded 30 bps to 45.8%, supported by strength across multiple merchandise categories, particularly home and furniture, ladies' accessories and lingerie, and shoes. Update: Quebecor Reports Q1 Beat; Amends NCIB; But "Extremely Cautious" On "Crisis" In Media Industry

Oil moved lower early on Thursday following reports Iran is allowing Chinese ships to transit the Strait of Hormuz.West Texas Intermediate crude oil for June delivery was last seen down US$1.48 to US$99.54 per barrel, while July Brent oil was down US$1.68 to US$103.95.The drop followed a Reuters report, citing Iranian state media, that Iran is allowing Chinese ships to move through the blocked Strait of Hormuz, and have allowed 30 vessels to move through the Strait "in recent hours".Iran closed the Strait to most traffic at the Feb. 28 start to the war launched by the United States and Israel, stranding hundreds of ships in the Persian Gulf and blocking 20% of daily oil demand supply by regional nations.The blockade of the Strait has pushed oil prices up by half since the start of the war. leaving Asian nations scrambling for physical supply and boosting inflation, raising concerns central banks will need to raise interest rates to cut demand. The United States this week reported wholesale and consumer prices surged last month, heightening concerns of higher rates, though the CME FedWatch Tool sees a 97.5% probability the Federal Reserve will leave rates unchanged during the June 17 meeting of its policy committee.Iran's control of the Strait is a key focus of the summit meeting underway between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Trump in Beijing. Canada's Wholesale Trade Rise a Tad Better Than Expected in March, says StatsCan

Canadian wholesale sales, excluding oil, oil products, and other hydrocarbons and excluding oilseed and grain, rose 1.9% month over month to $89.0 billion in March, said the country's statistical agency on Thursday.March's rise was slightly better than the 1.3% month-over-month consensus figure provided by Scotiabank.Sales increased in five of the seven subsectors, representing 79.6% of total wholesale sales, noted Statistics Canada in a statement. The largest increase came from the machinery, equipment and supplies subsector.Wholesale sales were 3.3% higher in March than in the same month one year earlier.In volume terms, wholesale sales excluding oil, oil products, and other hydrocarbons and excluding oilseed and grain increased 1.7% month over month in March.Wholesale inventories, excluding oil, oil products, and other hydrocarbons and excluding oilseed and grain, increased by 0.3% month over month to $137.2 billion in March, pointed out StatsCan.Inventories rose in three of the seven subsectors in March, with the largest increases occurring in the machinery, equipment and supplies subsector (2.0% to $41.4 billion) and the food, beverage and tobacco subsector (0.5% to $15.6 billion).The inventory-to-sales ratio decreased from 1.57 in February to 1.54 in March. This ratio measures the number of months required to exhaust inventories if sales remain at their current levels.

April US Retail Sales Rise as Expected, Gasoline Sales Continue to Climb

US retail sales rose by 0.5% in April, as expected in a survey compiled by Bloomberg as of 7:35 am ET and following the previous month's 1.6% gain.Excluding a 0.4% decrease in motor vehicle sales, retail sales were up 0.7%, also as expected. That followed a 1.9% gain in March.Removing both motor vehicles and a 2.8% gain in gasoline station sales, retail sales were up 0.5% in April after a 0.7% increase in March. Sales at food services and drinking places rose by 0.6% after a 0.1% gain in the previous month.There were also notable sales gains for electronics, groceries, sporting goods, and at nonstore retailers that were offset by declines in sales for furniture and clothing.The monthly retail sales report from the US Commerce Department measures spending on retail products and food, the largest portion of economic growth. The report covers spending on goods, with a services report released later each month.Investors watch the control group that excludes food services, autos, gasoline, and building materials because it feeds directly into the GDP report measuring economic growth.If the data shows a strong US economy, that's generally bullish for stocks and bearish for bonds.
