Sonoco Products' Industrial Trends Improve as Consumer Volumes Lag, UBS Says

Sonoco Products' (SON) industrial business is performing better than expected amid uncertainty around its consumer-segment volumes, UBS Securities said Friday in a report. The industrial segment is supported by strong demand for uncoated recycled board, high plant utilization, productivity gains, and several growth opportunities, UBS said.In the consumer division, North American aerosol and adhesives and sealant markets linked to housing and discretionary spending were weaker in Q2, while demand for paper-based composite cans and pet-food packaging remained healthy internationally, the report said.UBS sees early signs of a solid Q3 as consumer-goods companies increase packaging orders ahead of late-summer and fall demand. Pricing actions, contract pass-throughs, and freight surcharges should help offset inflation, with productivity savings expected to accelerate, the report said.UBS raised its price target on Sonoco stock to $61 from $58 and maintained its neutral rating.Price: $58.66, Change: $+0.43, Percent Change: +0.74%

Packaging, Forest Products Face Lackluster Demand, Weak Volumes, BofA Says

Packaging and forest products companies face lackluster demand and weak volumes outside beverage cans and selected specialty markets, BofA Securities analysts said in a Tuesday note.Analysts said that while inflation headwinds are expected to fade in the second half of the year, assuming a renewed ceasefire in the Middle East, foreign exchange could become an earnings risk.BofA said that beverage cans remain its preferred subsector, driven by stronger demand, improving aluminum economics, innovation, and the World Cup.Analysts said they are cautious on glass and paper, where volume weakness and potential operating-rate pressures could weigh on outlooks.BofA upgraded AptarGroup's (ATR) rating to buy from neutral, and raised its price objective to $173 from $148.It downgraded O-I Glass (OI) to underperform from buy, Greif (GEF) to underperform from neutral, and International Paper (IP) and Sylvamo (SLVM) to neutral from buy.BofA also resumed coverage of Graphic Packaging (GPK) with a neutral rating and a $12 price objective.Analysts increased the price objective on Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMBP) to $4.70 from $4; Amcor (AMCR) to $51 from $48; Avery Dennison (AVY) to $210 from $202; Ball (BALL) to $73 from $70; Crown (CCK) to $145 from $129; Karat Packaging (KRT) to $34 from $23; Silgan (SLGN) to $58 from $53; and Sonoco Products (SON) to $69 from $65.They also raised the price objective on Boise Cascade (BCC) to $81 from $80; Louisiana-Pacific (LPX) to $101 from $85; Packaging Corporation of America (PKG) to $263 from $242; and Greif to $70 from $68.BofA lowered its price objective on O-I Glass to $11 from $13, International Paper to $41 from $44, and Sylvamo to $45 from $58.Price: $128.79, Change: $+3.90, Percent Change: +3.12%

Research Alert: CFRA Keeps Hold Opinion On Shares Of Sonoco Products Co.

CFRA, an independent research provider, has providedwith the following research alert. Analysts at CFRA have summarized their opinion as follows:We decrease our 12-month target by $4 to $54 on an EV/EBITDA of 7.9x our 2026 EBITDA estimate, a discount to SON's three-year average of 8.0x. We decrease our 2026 EPS view by $0.07 to $5.90 and decrease 2027 by $0.08 to $6.50. We see an increased risk of guidance being lowered in Q2 following the near-miss this quarter and have lowered our EPS forecast accordingly. SON made a $20M investment in automated wood reel production to meet increased demand from wire and cable industry related to data center and power infrastructure build-outs. We believe this will have a strong ROI given the long-term demand growth we see in both these spaces. SON's new paper plant opened in Nong Yai, Thailand, serving the growing Asian snack market and increasing volumes by 6% in the region. We believe this volume growth should increase throughout 2026 as the region remains a bright spot in terms of volume this year.

Research Alert: Sonoco Products Co Q1: Revenue Below Consensus, Margins Down Y/y

CFRA, an independent research provider, has providedwith the following research alert. Analysts at CFRA have summarized their opinion as follows:SON's Q1 2026 results highlight persistent operational challenges, with net sales of $1.676B declining 1.9% Y/Y and missing consensus by $33M, primarily due to the November 2025 ThermoSafe divestiture. Adjusted EPS of $1.20 fell 13.0% from $1.38 in the prior year, though meeting consensus estimates, while GAAP improvements reflected favorable tax adjustments and divestiture impacts rather than underlying operational strength. The transformed portfolio continues facing headwinds despite management's strategic repositioning efforts. The significant adjusted metrics decline contrasts with GAAP improvements, suggesting the operational challenges may persist as the company navigates its post-divestiture structure. We believe the weak adjusted performance underscores concerns about the company's ability to generate sustainable growth from its current portfolio mix, particularly given the revenue shortfall relative to expectations.
