Research Alert: Pru Q1 Eps Tops Expectations But Japan Sales Suspension Is An Overhang

CFRA, an independent research provider, has providedwith the following research alert. Analysts at CFRA have summarized their opinion as follows:PRU reported Q1 2026 operating EPS of $3.61, up from $3.29 and beating our $3.18 estimate and the $3.11 consensus view. Net income declined 16% to $597M due to $621M in pretax investment losses versus $246M in the prior-year quarter. The quarter was overshadowed by PRU's April extension of the Prudential of Japan sales suspension to address ongoing employee misconduct issues first identified earlier in 2026. PGIM delivered strong 22% growth in adjusted operating income to $190M, with AUM reaching $1.433T, while U.S. businesses posted modest 3% growth to $956M led by 9% Retirement segment growth. International businesses declined 4% to $810M primarily due to Japan suspension-related expenses, though other international markets demonstrated resilience. We view the extended Japan sales suspension as a material negative catalyst that removes upside potential from the shares despite otherwise solid operational performance across PRU's diversified business segments.

Prudential Financial Recovery Uncertain Amid Japan Sales Suspension, Morgan Stanley Says

Prudential Financial (PRU) faces continued pressure from its voluntary suspension of new policy sales in Japan, with uncertainty around recovery in sales, revenue, and reputation, Morgan Stanley said in a note Monday. The company updated its earnings outlook after its Prudential Life Insurance unit in Japan decided to extend a voluntary sales suspension by another 180 days through November. Media reports also indicate that Japan's Financial Services Agency is conducting on-site inspections, and there are suggestions the company may have been aware of some of the problems, according to the note.Based on past cases of misconduct in Japan's life insurance sector, Morgan Stanley said the situation may not be resolved soon. While Prudential's case is different, "we believe it is more likely to experience longer term structural pressure on sales and annualized net premiums, given the breadth of the misconduct and the associated sales suspension," the firm said.Based on an estimated pretax operating earnings impact of $525 million to 575 million in 2026 and $400 million to $450 million in 2027, the firm said it is reducing its earnings per share estimates to $13.43 for 2026 and $14.73 for 2027.Morgan Stanley downgraded Prudential Financial from equal-weight to underweight, and cut its price target to $92 from $106.Price: $98.40, Change: $-0.22, Percent Change: -0.22%

Research Alert: CFRA Maintains Hold Opinion On Shares Of Prudential Financial, Inc.

CFRA, an independent research provider, has providedwith the following research alert. Analysts at CFRA have summarized their opinion as follows:We cut our target price by $13, to $100, valuing PRU shares at 6.9x our '27 operating EPS estimate of $14.40 (cut today by $1.10). We also cut our '26 EPS estimate by $1.40, to $13.10. These EPS reductions reflect our estimate of the impact of PRU's decision (announced last night) to extend the sales suspension at Prudential of Japan for another 180 days (through 11/5/26). This follows the Feb '26 initial 90-day voluntary suspension of new sales in Japan taken to address employee misconduct. While we laud PRU's candor in addressing this situation, we view this as a material issue. Japan is an important market for PRU, and its International Business unit accounted for nearly half of the firm's pretax operating profits in '25. We think this development removes a catalyst from the shares. Though it currently trades at only 6.8x our '26 EPS estimate (vs. its one-year average forward multiple of 7.4x and a peer average of 8.9x), and currently yield 5.7%, we do not recommend adding to positions at this juncture.
