Air New Zealand's On-Time Performance Improves Year Over Year in July

Air New Zealand (ASX:AIZ, NZE:AIR) said just over 83% of its flights arrived within 15 minutes of schedule in July, marking a 6.4 percentage point gain from a year earlier even as weather-related delay minutes rose 74%, according to a Wednesday statement.The company said it saw 246 fewer cancellations in July compared with last year as it improved disruption recovery through new technology.One of the top contributors to the annual improvement was a 41% decline in reactionary delay minutes, or when a delay to one flight has a knock-on effect on other flights later in the day. Compared with July 2025, 1,366 fewer flights were affected by knock-on delays, the company said."International on-time performance improved by more than nine percentage points, while Auckland, our largest and most complex operation, improved by almost 10 percentage points," said Kate Boyer, chief operations officer, ground and in-flight.Air New Zealand noted, however, that on-time performance eased from 86% in June.The company's New Zealand shares rose 1% in recent Wednesday trade, while its Australian shares fell 1%.

If the constructive tone from European and U.S. equity markets carries through, buyers ​should emerge early in the session and provide support for regional risk assets," said Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone ​Group in Melbourne, as quoted by Reuters.On the domestic front, data shows consumer credit performance in New Zealand is continuing to improve, with consumer arrears falling to their lowest level since 2021 in June and residential mortgage arrears reaching their lowest point since December 2022, Centrix said in the July Credit Indicator report.Also, ANZ overall card spending showed a 0.5% lift in July in New Zealand, on a seasonally adjusted basis, with annual growth lifting to 6.1% from 5.8%, according to a report from the bank.In corporate news, Air New Zealand (ASX:AIZ, NZE:AIR) group capacity rose 1.3% year on year in June.

Air New Zealand (ASX:AIZ, NZE:AIR) group capacity rose 1.3% year on year in June, according to a Tuesday filing with the Australian and New Zealand bourses.Long-haul available seat kilometers (ASKs) edged down 0.5%, while domestic ASKs decreased by 3.6%, driven by targeted capacity reductions following the sharp increase in jet fuel prices after the conflict in the Middle East, per the filing.Short-haul international ASKs rose 3.6% year on year, driven by the introduction of two new A321 aircraft.Group year-to-date underlying revenue per available seat kilometer rose 2.2% from the prior year.The airline carried 1.4 million passengers in June, flat compared with the previous year, while the passenger load factor edged down 1.1 percentage points to over 81%, the filing added.

Auckland International Airport Recovering Slower Than Expected, Jefferies Says

Auckland International Airport's (NZE:AIA, ASX:AIA) recovery is happening slower than expected due to disruption from the Middle East conflict, with June passenger statistics indicating volumes declining by 4.5% for domestic and 3.8% for international, Jefferies said in a Wednesday note.Passenger growth fell short of fiscal 2026 forecast as domestic passenger volumes grew by only 1.7% compared with the expected 2%, impacted by the decline in June.International passenger growth was only 1.6%, lower than the expected 3%, with the Middle East conflict causing a 62% drop in passenger volumes on affected routes, Jefferies said.However, flight capacity is expected to rebound in the next few months as Air New Zealand's (NZE:AIR, ASX:AIZ) wide-body aircraft constraints ease and Middle Eastern routes slowly recover.The recovery will also be supported by new incoming services from international carriers such as Thai Airways, Air Niugini, and Starlux.Jefferies reaffirmed its hold rating on Auckland International Airport and raised its price target to NZ$8.65 from NZ$8.49.Auckland International Airport shares fell nearly 2% in recent New Zealand trade on Thursday and 1% in Australia.
