Temu Parent PDD Second-Quarter Earnings Top Views; Revenue Falls Short

PDD (PDD) reported second-quarter earnings ahead of Wall Street estimates on Monday even as operating expenses rose annually, though revenue fell short of expectations. The Chinese e-commerce platform posted adjusted earnings of 19.33 renminbi ($2.88) per American depositary share for the June quarter, down from 22.07 renminbi the year before. Revenue from online marketing services improved to 57.64 billion renminbi from 55.7 billion renminbi in the prior-year period, while transaction services climbed 13% to 54.72 billion renminbi."Total revenue came in below consensus mainly due to softer transaction service partially offset by better online marketing," Jefferies equity analysts Thomas Chong and Zoey Zong said in a note emailed toon Monday. The consensus for transaction services revenue growth was about 22%, according to the brokerage.Total operating expenses rose 13% to 36.58 billion renminbi, mainly due to higher sales and marketing costs, PDD said."We stepped up our ecosystem investments in the second quarter," Vice President of Finance Jun Liu said. "At this stage, our priority is helping merchants thrive and strengthening the broader industry ecosystem."Last week, Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba (BABA) reported weaker-than-expected fiscal first-quarter earnings as it continued to spend heavily to build artificial intelligence infrastructure. Etsy Poised for Durable Growth Amid Better-Than-Expected Strategy Execution, BofA Says in Upgrade

Etsy (ETSY) is positioned for durable growth amid better-than-projected strategy execution and as third-party data continue to imply "conservative" guidance, BofA Securities said Thursday. The brokerage raised its 2027 non-GAAP earnings outlook for the online marketplace to $6.38 a share from $5.91 and its Etsy Marketplace gross merchandise sales, or GMS, growth estimate to 4.5% from 3%. GMS measures the total dollar amount of items sold on the platform."Execution under (Chief Executive) Kruti Patel Goyal's four growth pillars appears more durable than expected, and recent (third-party) data continues to imply conservative guidance," BofA analyst Michael McGovern said in a note to clients. The four pillars are the platform showing up where shoppers discover, better matching and personalization, loyalty, and human connection, according to the note.BofA upgraded its rating on the Etsy stock to buy from neutral and raised its price objective to $105 from $88."We think conservative estimates and an underappreciated capital-return story leave meaningful upside potential from here," McGovern said. "We are raising estimates further above (Wall) Street to reflect what we believe is durable growth, and improved potential efficiency post-(reduction in force)."Etsy shares were up 1.8% in Thursday afternoon trade. The stock has jumped nearly 48% so far this year.Earlier in the month, the company said it will reduce its marketplace workforce by 220 employees as part of a restructuring plan. Late last month, Etsy completed the sale of consumer-to-consumer fashion marketplace Depop to eBay (EBAY)."(Etsy's) growth looks increasingly structural rather than a spike, with more than $1 (billion) of dry powder for capital returns from the Depop sale providing a meaningful (earnings-per-share) tailwind," McGovern said Thursday. "Mobile app gains are creating richer buyer profiles, improving personalization and marketing efficiency, which reinforces both conversion and (lifetime value)."Earlier this month, Etsy raised its full-year GMS growth outlook to the mid-single-digit range."We believe that higher GMS and revenue growth sustained over time can create far greater absolute cash flow and shareholder value than can margin expansion alone," Chief Financial Officer Lanny Baker on an earnings conference call at the time, according to a FactSet transcript.Price: $81.96, Change: $+1.50, Percent Change: +1.86%

EBay to Extend Growth as AI, Focus Categories Gain Traction, Wedbush Says

EBay (EBAY) could sustain stronger merchandise volume growth through 2027 as focus categories, recommerce, AI tools, advertising and Depop support demand, while near-term margin pressure from the Depop deal is expected to ease over time, Wedbush said in a note Thursday.EBay's growth is becoming more durable because a larger share of merchandise volume now comes from areas the company can directly influence, including focus categories, consumer-to-consumer sales and recommerce, Wedbush said. The investment firm expects eBay to keep gaining from collectibles, vehicles, luxury and used fashion, while eBay Live could become a larger contributor after its merchandise volume increased about eightfold from a year earlier.Depop is expected to add to merchandise volume and revenue growth, although the acquisition will pressure earnings and margins in the near term, the firm said. Wedbush expects Depop to start adding to non-GAAP operating income in 2028, according to the note. The firm maintained the company's outperform rating while raising its price target to $137 from $135.Price: $104.14, Change: $+1.50, Percent Change: +1.46%

EBay's Depop Acquisition to Help Reclaim Market Share From Vertical Marketplace Competitors, UBS Says

EBay's (EBAY) acquisition of Depop is in line with its usual strategy that aims to recapture market share from competitors in vertical marketplaces, UBS said in a Tuesday note. The Depop online marketplace for secondhand clothes is seen expanding eBay's access to younger shoppers, as well as boosts its consumer-to-consumer fashion and recommerce positioning, according to the note. The company's Q3 guidance of gross merchandise value of 10% to 12% implies that its organic growth slows to a range of 7% to 9% from 14% in the previous quarter, UBS analysts said. With growth moderating from previous extraordinary levels, eBay's investment thesis returns to "blocking and tackling" with focus category expansion, which currently account for more than 70% of its total gross merchandise volume, the analysts said.Even with the company expected to invest in Depop, eBay's full-year 2026 operating profit guidance still surpasses expectations, the analysts said.UBS maintained the company's stock rating at neutral and raised the price target to $120 from $107.Price: $106.80, Change: $-0.91, Percent Change: -0.84%

Wayfair Second-Quarter Results Top Views Amid Top-Line Momentum; Shares Soar

Wayfair (W) shares surged Tuesday after the company reported better-than-expected second-quarter results, driven by its strongest US revenue growth in the post-COVID period. The online furniture and home goods retailer's June quarter consolidated revenue grew 7.5% year over year to $3.52 billion, ahead of a FactSet-polled consensus of $3.47 billion. Adjusted earnings rose to $0.95 a share from $0.87, surpassing Wall Street's $0.90 views.US revenue increased to $3.13 billion from $2.87 billion, while international sales fell to $394 million from $399 million."Our US segment accelerated to nearly 9% year-over-year revenue growth, continuing the high-single-digit share spread we held since last fall," Chief Executive Niraj Shah said on an earnings conference call, according to a FactSet transcript. "In fact, revenue growth in the US was the best we've seen in the entire post-COVID period."Wayfair shares were up 30% in afternoon trade. The stock has jumped nearly 16% so far in 2026."This was another impressive quarter of share momentum from the US, buoyed by some macro improvement," Chief Financial Officer Kate Gulliver said on the call. "However, that macro improvement did not extend to our end markets in Canada or the UK, which both saw continued pressure on consumer sentiment and discretionary spending."Orders increased 6% year over year in the quarter. "We saw new order growth in (the second quarter) accelerate for the fourth consecutive quarter and reach a post-COVID high," Gulliver told analysts. For the ongoing quarter, Wayfair projects a high-single-digit top-line growth, according to Gulliver.UBS Securities expected the company's second-quarter sales to grow 5.8% and said the results would likely "keep the share-gainer narrative alive" for the retailer."Few discretionary retailers are generating this type of growth profile in the current macro backdrop," the brokerage said in a July 29 note to clients. "We think a key tenet of the bull case is that (Wayfair's) top-line is showing strength at a time when others in the industry are languishing."Last week, e-commerce giant Amazon.com (AMZN) reported second-quarter results that topped the Street's views amid cloud-computing business strength.
