Darden Restaurants Q4 Highlights Persistent Trends, Demand Inflection, BofA Says

Darden Restaurants' (DRI) fiscal Q4 results and conference call highlighted a combination of persistent trends and inflection points, BofA Securities said in a research note.Persistence was seen in the form of continued robust performance of the steakhouse category and protein more generally, as elevated grocery store beef prices also raise the relative value provided by steakhouse restaurants, according to the Saturday note.BofA further said that elevated beef prices are unlikely to fall in the near term due to an already tight beef supply that could shrink further with the return of the New World screwworm. The investment firm said Darden CEO Rick Cardenas noted that the company's casual dining brands saw year-over-year increases in visits from all income groups, including the bottom quintile. The brokerage added that the apparent turning point in demand among low-income households may be due to a similar inflection in that cohort's wage growth, as measured by Bank of America Institute data.BofA lowered its price target on Darden Restaurants to $274 from $276 and reiterated its buy rating.Price: $206.44, Change: $-7.29, Percent Change: -3.41%

Darden Restaurants' Sales Trends Seen Holding Up Despite Macro Pressures, UBS Says

Darden Restaurants (DRI) is expected to post solid same-store sales growth for the fiscal fourth quarter at key brands despite macroeconomic pressures, including upside at LongHorn Steakhouse and modest downside at Olive Garden relative to consensus expectations, UBS Securities said Sunday in a report. The firm projects same-store sales growth of 2.9% at Olive Garden and 7.2% at LongHorn Steakhouse. Investor sentiment is "skewed negative" for Olive Garden due to an anticipated sales miss, tougher comparisons ahead and potential beef cost pressures, the report said.UBS forecasts blended fourth-quarter same-store sales growth of 4%, compared with Wall Street's 4.1% estimate. Investors generally expect Olive Garden's quarterly sales growth to come in the high-2% range, with LongHorn expected between 7% and 8%.Earnings are expected to remain broadly in line with Wall Street estimates, UBS said. Results are due Thursday.LongHorn Steakhouse is expected to maintain strong momentum, supported by consistent execution and menu innovation, UBS said. Olive Garden's performance is expected to be supported by value-focused promotions, affordability-driven menu initiatives, continued benefits from the Uber Direct partnership and incremental marketing investments.UBS maintained its buy rating on Darden stock with a $230 price target. Investors are likely to focus on management's outlook for beef costs, and insights into consumer restaurant demand in fiscal 2027, the report said.Darden entered the quarter with about 85% of its beef costs covered and expects operating margins to benefit from sales leverage, pricing in the mid-3% range, lower labor costs due to reduced turnover and favorable restaurant expenses, the report said.UBS forecasts fourth-quarter operating margins of 14.3%, in line with consensus estimates and up 70 basis points from a year earlier. The focus is on 2027 total inflation expectations "with beef cost projections likely still elevated, while the rest of the food basket and labor costs should remain relatively stable," the report said.Investor expectations for Darden's 2027 guidance are broadly in line with the company's long-term growth algorithm, UBS said.Price: $214.25, Change: $+0.80, Percent Change: +0.37%

US Equity Investors to Watch Out for Micron Technology's Earnings, PCE Inflation, Iran Peace Talks This Week

US equity investors will focus this week on quarterly earnings from Micron Technology (MU) and inflation, while keeping a close eye on progress in talks between Iran and the US.* Earnings due this week include Micron Technology (MU), FedEx (FDX), Cerebras Systems (CBRS), Carnival (CCL), Trip.com (TCOM), Darden Restaurants (DRI), and Paychex (PAYX).* Looking ahead to Q2, consensus estimates call for earnings growth of more than 22%, according to a note from DA Davidson late Thursday. All of the S&P 500 constituents have reported Q1 results. Earnings surged almost 29% year-over-year, versus nearly 13% expected as of March 31, the strongest growth since Q4 2021. Information technology and communication services led the growth. Health Care was the only sector to see earnings fall in Q1.* Macroeconomic data due this week includes personal consumption expenditures, or PCE, price index, final read on Q1 gross domestic product, ADP employment change, S&P global composite PMI, durable goods orders, and Michigan consumer sentiment final, as well as inflation expectations.* "We used to think [PCE] was the Federal Reserve's favourite inflation gauge but now we're less sure given the arrival of a new Chair [Kevin Warsh] who launched five taskforces this past week including one to look at different measures of inflation," a Scotiabank note said late Thursday.* The US and Iran agreed to create a "de-confliction cell," facilitated by Qatar and Pakistan to ensure the end of military operations in Lebanon, CNN cited mediators in a news report early Monday. Fighting between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah has been a key obstacle to a deal, with Tehran insisting that deadly Israeli strikes must stop.* Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said sanctions on Tehran's oil were waived and some of its frozen assets released, CNN reported. Araghchi was also cited as saying a "reconstruction and development plan" was launched.
