US Army Awards up to $2.2 Billion to 5 Companies for Microreactor Development

US Army has awarded up to $2.2 billion to five nuclear energy companies to own, build, and operate microreactors on military installations under its Janus Program, it said on Wednesday. The program is a nuclear energy initiative launched in 2025, in partnership with the Defense Innovation Unit, to support national defense missions through reliable energy.Antares Nuclear, one of the five vendors selected, will build a microreactor at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. It said its contracts to deploy dozens of reactors for the government have already exceeded $1 billion in value following the latest award.BWX Technologies (BWXT), meanwhile, will deploy its first advanced nuclear reactor at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. It intends to execute the program in phases, with site groundbreaking in late 2028 and reactor operation in the early 2030s.The department also selected General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems to construct a microreactor at Fort Hood, Texas. The company said it will build a 5-megawatt reactor, scalable to about 20 MW.Radiant Industries, on the other hand, will develop and deploy 15 nuclear microreactors by 2030 at Fort Benning, Georgia following a $750 million award from the US Army, which the company said was the largest award within the program.Westinghouse Government Services, which was also selected for the program, will develop a heat-pipe reactor that can run continuously for eight years without refueling, with potential siting at Fort Drum, New York."With the private sector funding expected along with these government dollars, the Army expects more than 20 total nuclear microreactors will be built and operated across Department of War installations," the department said. The Janus Program aims to deliver its first operating reactor by September 2028, in line with the target indicated in US President Donald Trump's Executive Order 14299.

NextEra, Dominion Merger Reinforces Power Infrastructure Supercycle Thesis, Wedbush Says

NextEra Energy (NEE) and Dominion Energy's (D) merger shows that the "AI-driven power demand supercycle is not a cyclical trade but a decades-long infrastructure build," Wedbush said in a note Monday. In the grid infrastructure and data center space, Quanta Services (PWR) and Willdan (WLDN) will be direct beneficiaries of the deal, Wedbush said, adding that a combined NextEra and Dominion spanning Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina will need a "sustained acceleration in transmission, substation, and distribution buildout."In the equipment and power management sector, Vertiv (VRT) and Eaton (ETN) are poised to benefit from scale procurement, the note said, adding the combined company's emphasis on "supply chain scale and procurement efficiency points directly to accelerating orders for thermal management, power conversion, and switchgear."In the power generation and fuel supply space, Constellation Energy (CEG), Vistra (VST), and Talen Energy (TLN) will likely also benefit from "demand confirmation," Wedbush said, adding the deal's "explicit framing of surging large-load demand" will support independent power producers serving the same Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions.Meanwhile, for the materials and enabling technologies sector, the "nuclear infrastructure thesis" will likely be boosted, Wedbush said, as the combined company's position as the second largest in US nuclear generation will back the "long-term investment case for the nuclear supply chain."Cameco (CCJ), BWX Technologies (BWXT), and NuScale Power (SMR) are the companies most directly linked to nuclear fuel, services, and reactor deployment, the note said.Price: $88.37, Change: $-5.00, Percent Change: -5.35%
