Vitol unit VC Renewables acquired Meridian Gridworks' 600-megawatt data center campus in South Carolina, expanding the energy firm's strategy of linking power supply with digital infrastructure, the company said Monday.
The campus will combine natural gas, solar, energy storage and fuel cell capacity to meet data center power needs, while retaining conventional grid connections as digital infrastructure investment grows.
Meridian Gridworks identified the South Carolina site for its potential to integrate on-site energy with data center and edge compute infrastructure, and will continue to oversee campus development under the transaction, Vitol said.
The project advances Vitol's strategy to strengthen US energy security, expand its natural gas footprint along the US Eastern Seaboard, and increase natural gas transportation, storage, and fuel cell capacity in South Carolina.
Meridian brings data center and edge compute experience to the partnership, while Vitol and VC Renewables contribute trading, infrastructure, natural gas, solar and storage expertise to support digital infrastructure growth along the US Eastern Seaboard.
"The rapid growth of digital infrastructure is creating significant demand for reliable, flexible, and increasingly sustainable power. We look forward to working with the Meridian team to develop a resilient, integrated energy solution for the South Carolina campus," said Andrew De Pass, head of energy transition investments at Vitol.
