US officials are demanding that Iran issue a public statement declaring the Strait of Hormuz open and that ships are allowed to transit the waterway, multiple media outlets reported on Friday.
Officials reportedly said internal struggles in Iran are hindering efforts to strike a deal.
Strikes this week in the Strait of Hormuz were reportedly initiated by a faction of members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, allegedly attempting to disrupt the US-Iran peace deal.
A failure by Iran to declare the Strait open to shipping will result in consequences, officials reportedly said.
The White House and Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to' request for comment.
