US Dollar Stronger Against The Loonie After "Hawkish" Speech by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at Jackson Hole

The US dollar strengthened against the loonie Friday afternoon after US Federal Reserve board chair Kevin Wash spoke at its annual symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

BMO Senior Economist Douglas Porter wrote in a note that "Warsh came out blazing with a mostly hawkish message and interpretation of the recent data".

TD Economics, in a note by economist Admir Kolaj, also described Chair Warsh's speech as "a hawkish assessment, prompting market odds to shift firmly toward a near-term rate hike".

The greenback was up 0.4% to C$1.3901 on last look.

Comex gold futures for December delivery fell 2.7% to $4,535 per ounce.

West Texas Intermediate October crude oil futures, the US benchmark, edged down 0.2% to $83.39 per barrel. October Brent oil futures, the international benchmark, fell 0.4% to $89.33 per barrel.

Inventronics (IVX.V) said Thursday after trade that second-quarter net earnings were relatively flat, edging down slightly to C$0.027 per share, from C$0.028 per share, in the prior year period.The company said revenue rose slightly, to C$2.3 million from C$2.2 million, over the same period.Inventronics shares last traded on Aug. 19, closing unchanged at C$0.75 per share.
