US Dollar Rises Early Friday Ahead of Fed Chair Warsh Appearance

The US dollar rose against its major trading partners early Friday, except for a decline versus the Canadian dollar, ahead of Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh's keynote address at the Fed's Jackson Hole Symposium, due at 10:00 am ET, at the same time as the final estimate of the University of Michigan's sentiment reading for August and the BLS's first estimate of the payrolls benchmark revision.

Earlier in the day, the Chicago PMI report for August is due to be released at 9:45 am ET.

The Kansas City Fed's services reading for August is scheduled to be released at 11:00 am ET, and the St. Louis Fed is due to update its Q3 GDP nowcast estimate around midday.

A quick summary of foreign exchange activity heading into Friday:

EUR/USD fell to 1.1647 from 1.1651 at the Thursday US close but was above a level of 1.1641 at the same time Thursday morning. Eurozone consumer confidence improved in August, but remained below its breakeven point, while the business climate reading declined further into negative territory, according to data released earlier Friday. European Central Bank policy board member Isabel Schnabel is scheduled to speak at 11:55 am ET. The next European Central Bank meeting is scheduled for Sept. 10.

GBP/USD fell to 1.3586 from 1.3593 at the Thursday US close but was above a level of 1.3575 at the same time Thursday morning. There are no UK data on Friday's schedule, but Bank of England policy board member Catherine Mann is due to speak at 10:30 am ET. The next Bank of England meeting is scheduled for Sept. 17.

USD/JPY rose to 159.6612 from 159.3991 at the Thursday US close and 159.4722 at the same time Thursday morning. Tokyo consumer prices, an early indicator of Japanese CPI, showed an accelerated pace of growth in August, while the Japanese unemployment rate declined in July, according to data released overnight. The next Bank of Japan meeting is scheduled for Sept. 17-18.

USD/CAD fell to 1.3850 from 1.3854 at the Thursday US close and 1.3875 at the same time Thursday morning. Canadian GDP data for Q2 and June are due to be released at 8:30 am ET, followed by Canadian budget data for June at 11:00 am ET. The next Bank of Canada meeting is scheduled for Sept. 2.

New Zealand Consumer Confidence Eases Slightly in August, ANZ Says

The ANZ-Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence index for New Zealand eased by one point in August to 98, still under par but 18 points higher than a low struck in April, ANZ Research said in a Friday report.The result came as the net proportion of households who think it's a good time to purchase a major household item fell 5 points to minus 12, indicating continued struggles for retail.The current conditions index eased to 83.4 from 88.5 in the previous month, while the future conditions index rose marginally to 107.7 from 106.5.Following some improvement in July, perceptions of current personal financial situations compared with a year earlier gave up much of their gains with a decline to negative 21% from negative 16%."Petrol prices averaged a higher level than in July, having jumped in the last week of the previous month, and that may have impacted perceptions of current financial situations," ANZ said.Additionally, the report showed inflation expectations for two years ahead remaining relatively stable at 4.7%, while house price expectations eased to 2.5% from 2.6%.

Japan's Unemployment Rate Shrinks to 2.4% in July

Japan's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 2.4% in July, according to data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on Friday.The reading missed the consensus forecast of 2.5% tracked by Investing.com, and compared with the 2.5% recorded in the previous month.The total number of unemployed persons was steady at 1.69 million, while the number of employed persons was also the same at 68.5 million.
