US Dollar Falls Early Thursday Ahead of Jobless Claims, Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing

The US dollar fell against its major trading partners early Thursday, except for a gain versus the yen, ahead of the release of weekly jobless claims and the Philadelphia Fed's manufacturing reading for August, both at 8:30 am ET.

Leading indicators data for July are due to be released at 10:00 am ET, followed by weekly natural gas stocks at 10:30 am ET.

A quick summary of foreign exchange activity heading into Thursday:

EUR/USD rose to 1.1697 from 1.1678 at the Wednesday US close and 1.1604 at the same time Wednesday morning. Eurozone construction output declined in June, according to data released earlier Thursday. The next European Central Bank meeting is scheduled for Sept. 10.

GBP/USD rose to 1.3635 from 1.3608 at the Wednesday US close and 1.3556 at the same time Wednesday morning. UK manufacturing expectations remained negative in August, according to data released earlier Thursday. The next Bank of England meeting is scheduled for Sept. 17.

USD/JPY rose to 158.6221 from 158.1342 at the Wednesday US close but was below a level of 159.1000 at the same time Wednesday morning. The Japanese trade deficit widened in July, according to data released overnight. The next Bank of Japan meeting is scheduled for Sept. 17-18.

USD/CAD fell to 1.3767 from 1.3811 at the Wednesday US close and 1.3876 at the same time Wednesday morning. Canadian industrial product, raw material and new home prices, all for July, are due to be released at 8:30 am ET. The next Bank of Canada meeting is scheduled for Sept. 2.

The People's Bank of China (PBOC) kept its benchmark lending rates steady at its monthly fixing on Thursday, matching the consensus forecast tracked by Investing.com.The one-year loan prime rate (LPR), which serves as the benchmark for most corporate and household loans, was held at 3.0%.Meanwhile, the five-year LPR, the reference rate for residential mortgages, was maintained at 3.5%.

Bank Indonesia Keeps Rates Unchanged

Bank Indonesia kept its key interest rates unchanged on Wednesday following the conclusion of its Board of Governors' meeting held Tuesday to Wednesday.The central bank left the seven-day reverse repurchase rate, or BI rate, unchanged at 5.75%, while also maintaining the deposit facility rate at 4.75% and the lending facility (LF) rate at 6.50%.Bank Indonesia said its decision was in line with efforts to strengthen the rupiah exchange rate stability amid the global volatility caused by the ongoing war in the Middle East.The central bank said the decision was also aimed at maintaining inflation within the target range in 2026 and 2027, and supporting sustainable economic growth."Bank Indonesia continues strengthening policies to maintain adequate liquidity in the money market, banking industry and economy, consistent with achieving the inflation target," the statement said.
