Update: US Equity Futures Mostly Flat Pre-Bell as Traders Evaluate Further Inflation Data

US equity futures were mostly flat pre-bell Thursday as traders evaluated another key inflation report, after yesterday's July consumer inflation reading matched forecasts.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were 0.2% higher, S&P 500 futures were up 0.1%, and Nasdaq futures were down 0.1%.

The July consumer price index rose 0.1% as expected, following a 0.4% decline in the previous month, according to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Wednesday.

The US and Iran have made no progress on talks to revive the interim peace deal made in June, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing a senior Iranian source. President Donald Trump said in a post on Truth Social that the US has "total control" over the Strait of Hormuz, to which Iran responded that the waterway is "under Iran's control and management."

Traders also digested the latest round of earnings, with Cisco Systems (CSCO) posting higher fiscal Q4 adjusted earnings and revenue.

Applied Materials (AMAT) is expected to report its fiscal Q3 earnings after the market closes. Analysts polled by FactSet expect earnings of $3.40 per share on revenue of $9 billion.

Oil prices were lower, with front-month global benchmark North Sea Brent crude down 2.3% at $86.94 per barrel and US West Texas Intermediate crude 2.5% lower at $81.18 per barrel.

The US Producer Price Index, released at 8:30 am ET, held steady in July following a 0.1% decrease in May, compared with an expected 0.2% gain in a survey compiled by Bloomberg. Initial jobless claims climbed to 209,000 in the week ended Aug. 8 from 200,000 in the previous week, compared with expectations for an increase to 202,000.

Federal Reserve Cleveland President Beth Hammack, Richmond President Thomas Barkin, and Atlanta Fed Interim President Cheryl Venable are slated to speak on Thursday.

In other world markets, Japan's Nikkei closed 1.2% higher, Hong Kong's Hang Seng ended 0.2% lower, and China's Shanghai Composite finished 0.5% lower. Meanwhile, the UK's FTSE 100 was down 0.4%, and Germany's DAX index was 0.4% higher in Europe's early afternoon session.

In equities, Cisco stock was down 6.8% after the company reported its fiscal Q4 financial results. Cerebras Systems (CBRS) shares fell more than 15% after the company swung to a Q2 net loss. Coherent (COHR) stock was 6% lower despite the company posting higher fiscal Q4 adjusted earnings and revenue.

On the winning side, Brookfield (BN) shares rose 1.5% after the company reported higher distributable earnings and revenue for Q2. Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) stock was up 2.4% after the company said it was collaborating with Progmat and Digital Asset Holdings on a proof-of-concept to bring Japanese government bond repurchase transactions on-chain through Canton Network. IBM (IBM) shares were up 1.1% after the company said it entered a partnership with OpenAI to help enterprises deploy AI across core business operations, modernize workflows, and strengthen cybersecurity.

TSX Closer: Index Closes at Fresh Record High as Financials Gain, Air Canada Surges

The S&P/TSX Composite Index rose for the fourth straight session to close at a new record high on Wednesday, supported by broad-based gains across most sectors and a sharp rise in Air Canada shares.The index closed up 186.22 points, or 0.5%, at 36,662.14, with most sectors closing higher. Financials led gainers, up 1.1%, while Information Technology and energy sectors were up 0.4% each.
