Update: Uber Technologies Ordered to Pay $40 Million in California Wrongful Death Case

Uber Technologies (UBER) was ordered to pay $40 million to the parents of Emily Normandin-Parker who was struck and killed along a California freeway in August 2023 after her Uber driver pulled over, law firm Panish Shea Ravipudi said Thursday.

Following a five-day arbitration, a retired judge found that Uber functions as a common carrier with a non-delegable duty to protect passengers and that it is liable for the negligence of its driver, according to the resolution.

In a statement emailed to, a Uber spokesperson said the company expressed sympathy to the Normandin-Parker family, but disputed the arbitrator's liability finding and said it has continued strengthening safety measures, including guidance to drivers on avoiding unsafe drop-off locations.

Uber shares were down 0.6% in Friday trading.
