(Updates to add the Energy Department's statement)
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham's government is said to be leaning toward approving the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea amid a push to bolster domestic energy supplies, The Telegraph reported Monday, citing sources close to the process.
According to the report, public consultation on Jackdaw recently concluded, and the findings are now expected to be reviewed by the Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment and Decommissioning within the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh will have the final say on the project, the news outlet reported.
A Department for Energy Security and Net Zero spokesperson told, "The North Sea remains a vital national asset, supporting jobs, growth and the UK's energy security. We are clear that oil and gas will continue to play an important role in our energy system for decades to come, alongside transitioning to clean power to protect jobs and tackle the climate crisis."
