Uber Technologies (UBER) was ordered to pay $40 million to the parents of Emily Normandin-Parker who was struck and killed along a California freeway in August 2023 after her Uber driver pulled over, law firm Panish Shea Ravipudi said Thursday.
Following a five-day arbitration, a retired judge found that Uber functions as a common carrier with a non-delegable duty to protect passengers and that it is liable for the negligence of its driver, according to the resolution.
Uber did not immediately respond to' request for comment.
Uber shares were down 1% in Friday trading.
