President Donald Trump late Tuesday paused the imposition of 50% tariffs on certain Canadian imports, shortly before the duties were to be applied on Wednesday.
"I have paused the 50% Tariffs against Canada, that were scheduled to kick in tomorrow morning for a three day period, based on the fact that Canada and the U.S.A., subject to the finalization of documents, have a DEAL!" Trump posted on the social-media platform Truth Social.
The new tariffs on Canada were to be imposed under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930.
In a separate post, the Office of the US Trade Representative said the deal would include improved market access for US goods in Canada, along with "economic security commitments" and "digital trade alignment," issues that have long divided the two countries.
