All three major US stock indexes were down slightly in late-morning trading Friday, as the S&P 500 closes a week in which it hit an all-time intraday high, according to media reports.
In company news, Workday (WDAY) is in talks to be acquired by private equity firm Silver Lake, Reuters reported Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter. The companies have engaged in recent months, but a deal is not guaranteed, the report said. Workday shares were down 3.9% around noon after soaring in the previous day.
Applied Materials (AMAT) reported fiscal Q3 adjusted earnings late Thursday of $3.50 per diluted share, up from $2.48 a year earlier, and above the FactSet consensus estimate of $3.40. Fiscal Q3 revenue was $9.12 billion, up from $7.30 billion a year ago, and above the FactSet consensus of $9 billion. For fiscal Q4, the company expects adjusted EPS of $4.02, plus or minus $0.20, on revenue of $10.25 billion, plus or minus $500 million. Analysts expected EPS of $3.71 on revenue of $9.55 billion. Applied Materials shares were down 5.6%.
Nu Holdings (NU) reported a Q2 net income late Thursday of $1.06 billion, up from $637 million a year earlier. Second-quarter revenue was $5.88 billion, up from $3.77 billion a year ago, and above the FactSet consensus of $5.39 billion. Nu shares were up $10.4%.
Tesla (TSLA) is planning to reveal its new Roadster as soon as this month at an event that will feature a "flying" stunt, The Information reported Friday. Tesla shares were down 0.9%.
Reddit (RDDT) will replace AvalonBay Communities (AVB) on the S&P 500 prior to the opening of trading on Aug. 18, S&P Dow Jones Indices said late Thursday. Reddit shares were up 14.0%.
Birkenstock (BIRK) said an entity affiliated with L Catterton launched a $1 billion underwritten secondary offering of the company's shares. Birkenstock shares were down 2.9%.
