Sector Update: Energy Stocks Fall Pre-Bell Wednesday

Energy stocks were lower premarket Wednesday, with the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) retreating by 4%.

The United States Oil Fund (USO) was down 7.5%, while The United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was 1.4% lower.

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil was down 10% at $91.80 per barrel at the New York Mercantile Exchange. Global benchmark North Sea Brent crude oil fell 9.6% to $99.34 per barrel, and natural gas futures were 2.5% lower at $2.72 per 1 million British Thermal Units.

TotalEnergies (TTE) shares were down more than 4% before the opening bell, reversing the 1.4% gain from the prior session. The company said it signed an agreement with Dell Technologies (DELL) and Nvidia (NVDA) to design and install its next high-performance supercomputer, called Pangea 5, in southern France.

Equinor (EQNR) shares were down more than 8% premarket after the company reported lower Q1 revenue.

Select Water Solutions (WTTR) stock was up over 4% after the company reported better-than-expected Q1 earnings and revenue.

Energy stocks were rising late Tuesday afternoon, with the NYSE Energy Sector Index adding 0.6% and the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) up 0.2%.The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector Index was decreasing 0.5%, and the Dow Jones US Utilities Index was up 0.1%.Crude oil futures slumped after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the ceasefire agreement with Iran remains in force. Shell shares rose 0.5%.Diamondback Energy (FANG) said operators may add 20 to 30 oil rigs in the US Permian Basin this year as elevated crude prices and supply disruptions tied to the Middle East conflict support higher activity. Diamondback shares were down 3.2%.GE Vernova (GEV) and Blue Energy are planning to develop a 2.5 gigawatt power facility in Texas that will combine nuclear and natural gas, the companies said Tuesday. GE Vernova shares added 2%.Enlight Renewable Energy (ENLT) shares climbed 2.8% after it reported higher-than-expected Q1 earnings and revenue.

Sector Update: Health Care Stocks Higher Late Afternoon

Health care stocks edged higher late Tuesday afternoon, with the NYSE Health Care Index and the State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLV) each increasing about 0.4%.The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was up 0.1%.In corporate news, Edgewise Therapeutics (EWTX) shares jumped 22% after Wedbush lifted the company's price target to $46 from $32, while keeping its outperform rating.Pfizer's (PFE) Q1 results surpassed analyst estimates as robust demand across its key brands offset weakening sales of its COVID-19 products. Its shares rose 0.9%.Merck (MRK) shares added 0.6%. Sector Update: Financial Stocks Rise Late Afternoon

Financial stocks advanced in late Tuesday afternoon trading with the NYSE Financial Index rising 0.6% and the State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF) adding 0.2%.The Philadelphia Housing Index gained 2.1%, and the State Street Real Estate Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLRE) increased 0.3%.Bitcoin (BTC-USD) rose 2.1% to $81,532, and the yield for 10-year US Treasuries shed 3 basis points to 4.416%.In economic news, two surveys painted a mixed picture of the US services sector in April, with Institute for Supply Management data showing a deceleration in growth and an S&P Global (SPGI) report indicating a return to expansion.The US trade deficit grew in March as imports outpaced record-high exports, government data showed.
