Consumer stocks were mixed premarket Thursday, with the State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) 0.7% higher and the State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) down 0.1%.
Darden Restaurants (DRI) shares were down 1.8% after the company posted higher fiscal Q1 adjusted earnings and revenue, but revenue fell short of analysts' expectations.
MGM Resorts International (MGM) stock was down more than 10% after People (PPLI) dropped its offer to acquire the casino operator.
Starbucks (SBUX) said in a regulatory filing it will close about 250 North American coffeehouses, or about 1% of its more than 18,000 locations, because they "do not deliver the coffeehouse experience and financial performance expected of the brand." Starbucks shares were 0.6% higher pre-bell.
