Saudi Arabia's construction cost index maintained its annual growth rate for the second straight month in August, as equipment rentals, basic material costs and labor continued to push expenses upward.
Year-over-year construction costs in the country increased by 2.3% in August, according to data from the General Authority for Statistics published Tuesday.
The residential sector construction cost index rose 2.1% year on year, driven by a 1.8% increase in basic material expenses, primarily led by higher metal product prices. The index rose 2.2% in July.
Residential sector costs were further driven up by a 4.1% hike in equipment rental fees, a 5.1% jump in labor, and a 3% climb in energy prices.
Higher equipment rentals, labor, energy and basic material costs also boosted annual non-residential construction expenses up 2.6%, matching the increase a month earlier.
Meanwhile, month-on-month construction costs in the kingdom ticked up 0.1%, after zero growth in July, reflecting a 0.1% cost rise in both residential and non-residential sectors.
